Virginia Tech 17, Virginia 14 Georgia Tech 45, Georgia 42. Way back in September, Virginia Tech took advantage of three Georgia Tech turnovers to win a game it may not have "deserved" to win, 20-17. So three months later, as Georgia Tech's "quirky" offense rolled up 86 points and 882 yards rushing in consecutive wins over Miami and Georgia, the Hokies had the luxury of just doing what they do; specifically, surviving lackluster offensive performances against the two worst teams in the conference, Duke and Virginia, to wrap up another division championship. Georgia Tech has a better overall record (9-3 to VT's 8-4), will be ranked higher than the Hokies for the third week in a row, just earned the ACC's best non-conference win of the season and, after what the Jackets have done offensively on national television the last two weeks, might constitute an actual draw for the dreaded conference championship next week. The Jackets also beat the Atlantic Division champion, whether it's Boston College or Florida State. For the first time all year, an ACC team looks like it's separated itself from the pack.

But: 20-17 after three turnovers in September. A tiebreaker rule is a tiebreaker rule.

I guess it was always inevitable that the cards would shake out for the Hokies. They were the favorite in the preseason despite possibly crippling attrition; they proceeded to lose to East Carolina in the opener. I thought they were the favorite again in September after surviving tests from Georgia Tech and North Carolina in their first two conference games, then predicted the Hokie stranglehold in mid-October, just before both Tyrod Taylor and Sean Glennon were injured in back-to-back losses to Boston College and Florida State, after which I said their ACC hopes rested on another November miracle. Now, at the end of November, Tech finishes 3-1 for the month, heads to its fourth ACC Championship in five years and I guess I was right like three different times. I mean, you always knew it was going to be Virginia Tech out of the Coastal, right? It's always Virginia Tech.

As for Georgia Tech: The Jackets may have singlehandedly salvaged the ACC's reputation today, and how many hard-luck offenses will take a long look this winter at installing the flexbone after the last two weeks? Paul Johnson's scheme hung 45 on a defense that hadn't allowed more than 17 points to the Jackets in any of their seven straight losses in the series; he looks like the only living Jedi master of one of the most explosive systems in the country. A guy in his position can command an innovator's ransom in consulting fees, if he's into that sort of thing.

So, what I'm getting from you and Orson is that Georgia Tech is the light side of the force, and Florida is run by the dark Jedi.

437 yards rushing and 38 points to a team that only attempted 6 passes, completing just one of them. growing up in a wishbone, triple-option football town, i was seriously unimpressed with coach martinez's 4-4 scheme designed to stop johnson's flexbone. only twice did i see a defender actually attack the pitch man before or while the ball was being pitched. while the dawgs did a fantastic job attacking the dive and the qb keeper, they had no answer whatsoever for the pitch man and the flex sweep. curiously, no adjustment was made, neither at halftime nor in the 4th quarter after getting gashed for 200 in the 3rd. despite the immense loyalty coach richt has for his staff, i'm not sure he'll be able to ignore the collective call from the bulldog nation for the head of willie martinez. while i still sit on the fence in regards to the matter, there's no way that georgia should ever, ever lose when they score 40 points.

we scored 42 points!! WOOOOOO!!11111!!!!! we must have won-- wait, what? We lost??? WTF.
    .. how many yards rushing?
9-3 Georgia is seen as the most disappointing season in the Richt era
9-3 Tech is seen as the second coming.
It's all about perspective i guess. After this season we will loss our most talented players to the draft and this season will look like even more of a 'waste'
Hats off to Tech for adjusting at the half and taking UGA to the woodshed.
Game ball from Tech goes to Reshad Jones for missing assignment and giving up a few 60 yard touchdown runs as well as playing touch football as the last hope in another 60ish yard TD romp that put the game away. Someone give his scholarship away

WOOOHOOOOO!!!!! How bout them dawgs. SEC,SE....... Oh wait thats right ACC,ACC,ACC. Maybe this will help to show that the SEC really isnt as strong as the media makes them out to be. Florida and Alabama are the only good teams in that conference but the conference as a whole is weak. So maybe that whole SEC strength of schedule crap will stop

I don't know how you people think... How can anyone say that GT is better than VT when VT kicked GT's as*es?!?!
IT IS SIMPLE, WHEN A TEAM BEAT ANOTHER TEAM, THEN THEY ARE THE BETTER TEAM. The Hokies will revenge their loss to the Eagles and easily beat Cincinnati in the BCS game.

I hate spewing hyperbole, but that may have been one of my top ten favorite games to watch EVER. Big bad Bulldogs kept clawing back (thru the air mind you) only to get stung again on the ground as the Jackets kept up the 10-point lead.
Imagine another year of familiarity with the Johnson offense, another year of maturation for their excellent defense and a couple more balls bouncing their way in 2009 - GT may be a national title contender.

All of this crap would and can be easily fixed if the NCAA would adopt a playoff bracket system like they use for NCAA basketball. Its a joke at how some of these powerhouse schools get to "pad" their records by playing other schools that would have a hard time beating some high school teams. If the NCAA wanted to solve the controversy, they easily could. The reason they don't is because it gives them something more valuable, PUBLICITY.

Hokie Fan, I think it's fair to say GT's the better team, since they have a better record at 9-3 than the Hokies' 8-4. Of course, yes VT was the better team on the day they played GT, but the Jackets have had a better season overall.
If you truly believe that "IT IS SIMPLE, WHEN A TEAM BEAT ANOTHER TEAM, THEN THEY ARE THE BETTER TEAM," that ECU is better than VPI. (Please note: all-caps does not make a statement more correct.)

I'm amazed ( I shouldn't be) at the short memories of college football fans! Everyone was jumping on the Georgia Tech bandwagon after the Miami demolition and now after beating UGA they are ready to "be a National Title contender".
Fortunately Division and Conference championships are determined based on entire seasons, not one or even two games.
Does anyone remember the 3 games GT played just prior to the Miami game? Let me refresh your memories: They included a 28-7 thumping by UNC, a gift win over FSU when Marcus Sims fumbled at the goal line and a home loss to lowly UVA. This is a National Title contender, come on guys lets be real.
I am not saying VT has been stellar by any stretch either, but as I said divison and conference championships are determined based on entire seasons, GT had their changes including Saturday, September 13th. They have known since that Saturday that they had to finish one game ahead of VT in the standings because they didn't have the tirebreaker. They had 2 1/2 months to make up that one game and in the end they couldn't get it done, so they get the coming week off while VT plays for a Conference Championship!

By the way, maybe some of you GT fans would like to bypass the first tiebreaker (head-to-head) and go straight to tiebreaker #2, divisional record. GT (2-3) and VT (4-1). Sorry, how about #3, NOPE. We could always go to the higher ranking team in the BCS (Beauty Contest Supreme), that seems to be working for the Big 12 South. Just face it the more deserving team is playing this Saturday!

doug - i dont think anyone is saying that vt doesnt deserve to be playing this weekend. you all won the division. that doesnt, however, mean you have had the best overall year or the best season. i think in 2006 when we went to the acccg, vt probably had the best overall season. thats the way it works.
all i ask is that if you beat bc, win the orange bowl. dont be a typical vt team and suck in the bowls.

The way all the teams in the ACC are currently playing, Georgia Tech would have trouble getting 200 yards on the ground against Boston College. Great defense will always beat good offense. BC will beat VaTech and move on to a BCS bowl.

Two years ago GT went up to Blacksburg and beat VT early in the season. GT jumped to a 21 point lead in the first quarter on some big plays. VT made it close but couldn't come all the way back. VT finished strong that year winning its last 6 reg season games and ended up 10-2, 6-2 in conference and around 10th ranked. GT finished 9-3, 7-1 and won the division and went to the championship game. VT had recently dominated Wake Forest 27-6 (the other division champion). GT lost its last regular season game to UGA. At that time I thought that VT was the better team and if they hadn't had that first quarter collapse early in the season they would have gone on to the ACC champ game and played Wake again and likely won that game. GT lost to Wake in the champ game 9-6. Both teams went on to lose their bowl games that went to the end.
My point is that year I felt like GT benefited by an early season poor performance and beat VT out that year even though at the end of the season I think VT was a stronger team. This year the opposite happened. I agree GT is the better team now and we were very luck to win the head to head game early in the season. The VT offense is terrible for sure and I can easily see them finishing as GT did in 2006 with a loss to BC and a bowl loss. I am hoping that is not the case. But, GT had their chances, UVA is the game they should have won. That's football. Sometimes things bounce your way, sometimes they don't. And the whole season matters. Frankly, I would be afraid to play NC State right now but they got off to a bad start and fell short.

GT clearly has been more an impressive by most measures, but VT advanced by a set of rules that closely resembles a PLAYOFF system. And, they will have an opportunity to play a playoff game next week. I would like to see GT take on whichever Arena Football Team from the Big 12 that does not lobby their way into a BCS bowl and show that the ACC actually has a lot of quality teams this year if not any in the Top 10. The ACC has had balance this year making for a compelling and interesting set of games week in and week out. This is why we love college football so much, is it not?

Can we please move the ACC Championship to Charlotte or DC? I realize that Jacksonville was a good idea back when it was supposed to be FSU and Miami running away with the Conference for years in a row. But the last few contenders? GT, WF, BC and VT. Fans bases are loyal, but Boston to Tampa is expensive.

If GT ws capable of beating VT they should have done it when they had the opportunity. I'm sure Texas would like another shot at Tech as OU would at Texas. I'm really looking forward to the Alabama and Florida match up. Oh the whining that will follow that one!

As a GT fan and alum, I have to agree with Doug Pierce: we finished strong, but we can't claim we should go to the ACCCG if we don't win where it counted, ACCCG-wise.
This season has exceeded expectations by far for GT, and I still am more satisfied that we're sending UGAG's seniors away with a loss to us than winning our conference -- we have next year to add that to our focus. This year we needed to get the UGAG monkey off our back.
VT - please do the Coastal a favor and win the conference and the BCS bowl.
    Thanks.
