Kansas State 62, Texas A&M 14. Here is the worst single loss any team has suffered yet this season, and the really morbid aspect of this score -- achieved by the same Wildcat team that was trounced by 52 points last week at Texas Tech -- is that it could have been much worse. K-State led 38 nothing at the half and 59-0 with 10 minutes to play in the third quarter before conceding mercy for the final 25 minutes. Up to that point, it was one of the most miserable nights in Aggie history -- to wit, in the first 35 minutes alone:

A&M turned the ball over four times, all four leading to touchdowns by K-State's 99th-ranked scoring offense.

By combination of turnovers and special teams, the Wildcats began five drives in Aggie territory, four inside the A&M 30, and scored touchdowns on all five.

In his second career start, K-State quarterback Grant Gregory hit 11 of 14 passes with one touchdown and a 193.9 efficiency rating.

 • In his 20th career start, Aggie quarterback Jerrod Johnson completed fewer than half of his passes, was sacked six times and threw three interceptions. Including those sacks, A&M finished with –17 yards rushing as a team against a defense that ranked last in the Big 12 in sacks and tackles for loss.

 • At one point in the second and third quarters, Kansas State scored four touchdowns in a little over two minutes of game time, finishing a long TD drive with a minute remaining in the first half; scoring again with five seconds remaining in the half after an A&M fumble; returning the opening kickoff of the second half 96 yards for a touchdown; and scoring on a one-play, nine-yard "drive" a minute later following an Aggie interception.

Coming into the day, the only team I suspected of having possibly given up on the season was Illinois, which sealed its fate as the worst team in the Big Ten with a double-digit loss at Indiana. That's a bad loss, an inexcusable loss for Illinois fans, but at least the Illini were somewhat competitive. If any team had a reason to quit, it was Colorado after its season-opening embarrassments against Colorado State and Toledo, and the Buffs have responded by giving West Virginia and Texas tough games on the road and coming home to stun undefeated Kansas tonight in Boulder.

Texas A&M, on the other hand, could not have conceivably engaged in such a comedy of errors with anything like a normal effort. A bad team may lose to Arkansas by four touchdowns; it may even lose by three touchdowns to Baylor after the Bears took their foot off the gas. But it takes genuine apathy to fall more than eight touchdowns behind to Kansas State in a little more than two quarters. "Incompetence" doesn't quite cover that situation, just like "patience" doesn't quite cover A&M's policy toward coach Mike Sherman if he survives the rest of his second season.

Who cares about TAMU? Did anyone read Olin Buchanan's article disrespecting Texas...Rivals is crap and so is Olin, what kind of name is Olin anyway? his picture looks like he is a retard...all Texas fans should cancel Rivals and never click on a Rivals link. Florida almost lost to Ark at home and everyone says ohh! that Tebow! he always steps up when he needs to...excuse me? Florida is overated and so is Alabama, did you see that game against S Car.? Alabama's running game will be stopped this year and they will be beaten. Remember Texas has NEVER lost to Alabama (7-0) and NEVER lost to Florida (2-0). Bring those SEC clowns on. Texas will win in Pasadena just like in 2005 when they beat the "greatest college football team ever aka USC Trojenz"!

TAMU was a powerhouse in the 90's to early 2000's and have fallen harder then any former power.

Probably not what A&M fans want to hear, but Mike Leach with East Texas talent would destroy universes. Get rid of Sherman and go get a guy with a system that works in college.

With all the trouble Texas had against OU you want them to play Bama, JohnC? Sounds like a bad idea to me. Colt McCoy would be Colt McBroken when the Bama D got through with him.

Problem is, ags signed the moron to a 7 year deal, and they are still paying Fran's contract. Ags are stuck...they can't afford to pay a third coach, too...

    Mike Sherman = Hank Foldberg
With season-ticket sales plummeting, it may be cheaper in the long run to pay three coaches.
This is the darkest period in Texas Aggie football history... The Lost Decade. Present-day powers-that-be in College Station have no comprehension of what it takes to thrive in present-day college football and are living in the '60s.
On the other hand, golf and track are A-OK.... basketball looks good too.

I've analyzed this from many angles and, after careful consideration, I've determined that A&M sucks... Not much more needs to be said.

A&M should save themselves the embaressment and disband the football program. That money could go to fund something worthwhile- such as teachers.

I agree with you, Doc. This was the worst loss of the season by an AQ team. http://www.pro-football-reference.com/blog/?p=4297#comment-100759

Good article, Matt. Please keep telling the story. Maybe someone in College Station will start listening after the multiple embarassing losses to come.

When you really -- I mean really -- think about it, A&M was NEVER a power except in the hazy final days of the SWC, and they still got smoked in the bowls most years back then. They have about as much tradition as, oh, I don't know, Michigan St. it's had some great years here and there, but never has been the national power its boosters somehow think it should be. (Kinda the equivalent of NC State basketball - although NC St. has at least won something of importance in the last 40 years).

Football is a sport but life is a bigger picture. A young mans life is no more. Plz respect will god has given and not use this time for racist, bigot, ignorant remarks. "Am I my brothers' keeper"? I WILL NOT LET YOUR HATE BE MY HATE!" It's a loss to all of us when there is no reason for a life to be taken and anyone who uses it as a an opportunity to spew their hateful thoughts at such a sorrowful moment is prue evil. Still I send my condolences to this mans' loved ones. It reads that he was soon to be a father, I pray that this child doesn't suffer for lack of a father in his life as stated that his teammates will keep his memory alive. To those who speak on his child to be "If your realIy concerned about this child, actions speak louder than words". I pray for all even the person(s) who is living their life with hate in their heart for they are seemingly devoid of human compassion. Now you can all get back to your ball games.

Whoever says that bringing in a former pro coach to the college ranks will help you recruit and win - is wrong.
    (See: Nebraska & Bill Callahan).
A&M has to have more money than any other school (except for UT), so they should be drumming up money right now to get ready to buy out his contract. Alabama is probably borrowing money from the Russian Mafia and the Taliban to fund Nick Saban and pay out Shula's country club memberships - but hey.....last I checked they were ranked #1 within Saban's 2nd year of coaching and they have stayed around the top 5 since then.
Go for a born and raised college coach and pay him $1 billion if you have it. A&M fans will pay $200 a ticket if they have to.
