Stanford 55, USC 21. There's no point here in declaring "The King is Dead," because the king was already dead. Oregon emphatically ended USC's seven-year reign at the top of the Pac-10 by administering the worst beating of the Pete Carroll era three weeks ago in Eugene; the passing . What Stanford did today was more like dig up the king's corpse and drag it around the village for public display, just to affirm the reality to the disbelieving townsfolk: Do you see that the tyrant is but flesh and blood and can victimize you no longer? And then drawing and quartering the thing for good measure.

Sorry for the grisly imagery, but there's no other way to classify USC's descent into utter mediocrity. This was no lapse -- all of the worst aspects of the last four seasons were on morbid display, and every one of them has become all too familiar from the Trojans' previous collapses: The Trojans were humiliated at home by Stanford, again. They were dealt their worst defeat of the Carroll era, again. They were baffled and pulverized by a top-tier rushing offense for more than 300 yards on the ground, again. They shot themselves in the foot with an ugly turnover margin, again. They failed to stretch the field in the passing game, again. Faced with mounting adversity in a competitive situation, they quickly yielded to a blowout down the stretch, again.

There's no novelty, no numbers to dissect, no depressing new lows to contemplate this time. No possible way to shrug it off as an anomaly or calculate how the Rose Bowl is still within reach. Just acceptance of the reality, for this year at least, that the Holiday Bowl is now the best-case scenario, and probably not even a likely one. With four straight rotten performances -- aside from the debacles against Oregon and Stanford, there were also the narrow escapes from a defensive collapse against Oregon State and an offensive collapse at Arizona State, and the last-second escape from South Bend could make five straight rotten outings if you're so inclined -- and ranked conference contender Arizona still on the schedule, the Las Vegas Bowl seems more apt at this point. The BCS plunder will be appropriated elsewhere -- and with it, quite possibly, the loyalties of some of the demanding fans who made the Coliseum a ghost town by the time Tyler Gaffney punched in the Cardinal's final touchdown.

And though the crown almost certainly will not fall to Stanford (barring some mathematical miracle at the top of the Pac-10 standings), the Cardinal clearly are the hottest, most frightening team on the West Coast at the moment, off genuine, physical beatdowns of Oregon and USC in back-to-back weeks. The path from the hopelessly overmatched bottom dweller Harbaugh took over to the soon-to-be top 20 outfit with consecutive blowouts of the league's biggest heavyweights is staggering, especially when you consider that they're trotting out a redshirt freshman quarterback.

There will be more time to consider the Cardinal's startling turnaround in full, but suffice to say this team probably deserves better than the usual three-fourths-full stadium when Cal and Notre Dame come to Palo Alto the next two weeks.

I've been impressed by this Stanford offense all year. Really an underrated team all year. They've only been out of one game all year, the loss to Oregon St. What's impressed me about Harbaugh is that this team has improved from the one that gave up 2nd half leads to Wake Forest and Arizona. The 50+ pt beatings the Cardinal have put on Oregon and USC rival anything that Cal has done during the Tedford era. It's a shame that Javid Best will be unavailable next week because on paper a Best vs. Gerhart match is tasty. However, I have feeling that Cal will fold the way they have against any quality opposition over the last three years. It will be really interesting to see if Harbaugh can take the next step and turn Stanford into multiple year contenders.

And this, children, puts in some perspective the exploits of the much maligned Bobby Bowden. USC under Carroll is, probably not completely finished (I mean they are still loaded with 5 stars...?...right...?...well I mean aren't they..?!?) but the descent from the apogee of 2004 to the underachievement of the last three years and the almost complete collapse this year put the achievements of the Alabaman on the suitably elevated pedestal (the obvious improvement in overall quality in the Pac 10 this year notwithstanding).

I have said it earlier this year but there is much more parity across the leagues; there are no real dominate teams as there used to be in the past years. It is good to see the fresh blood in the conferences shake it up and the old giants fall! It would be nice if the poll voters would stop relying upon their past knowledge of teams and vote based on records and performance. How was Iowa below OSU prior to their loss this week in both polls outside the BCS yet seem to play pretty evenly? USC was overrated for most of the year considering what they lost and who they had to rebuild with. They were hailed and talked up on shows despite their obvious weaknesses and inability to make tackles in the recent weeks.
Anyway, I'm a USC fan, but I never thought they would remain on top because of all of that. I like what I see of USC for the coming years though for when the players mature and come together...they will definitely be formidable! I think next year they could make their way back to the top, but I hope there is some struggle again in doing so, like there had been in the past. Makes for a much more interesting and exciting season!

Carroll again, outcoached, his Parade All Americans outplayed, and his assistant coaches badly underperforming. Barkley looks like the rank freshman he is. USC hasn't dealt with adversity well and it's deserving of the beatings and humiliations it's taking. The king is dead. All the Parade All Americans in the world can't make up for a lack of intelligence or common sense. The egos were out of control and still are. I hope these kids smarten up and quickly. USC has wet its pants on national TV to many times this season. The school needs to look at the coaching staff and HARD.

I still think USC is a great team. Stanford has been very underrated this season. The Pac 10 is going to be very exciting for the next couple of years.

That was humiliating the defensive and offensive coordinators need to go. They need to give Corp ansd Mustain a fair chance Barkley looked like a high school quarterback he couldn't have beaten Jordan HS today. This was a total team loss but the defense has not been ready to play the last 4 games. Bring back Chow this bozo coorinator they have now sucks.

Is this finally going to get people to start getting off the USC bus. They suck.....now get over it. They had their first loss and that was a "fluke". Then they get beat by Oregon and its....an "OK" loss because Oregon is a good team. Now they get beat by Stanford and ???? Will they still be a top 10 team with 3 losses now?

You might have praised Stanford a bit more rather than pile on the obvious on SC not being as good as they have been?...Give Stanford some credit and dont expect to be able to live up to a great record under Carrol forever...NIce SC bashing article!

jee, dont worry usc, those worthless idiot sportswriters will only drop you two slots in the polls. you guys could go 3-9 and they would still have you ranked in the top ten. pathetic isnt it? ANY other team with 3 losses, 2 by blowouts, would be out of the top 25

I know the players and staff are disappointed, as USC has set very high standards for themselves, but I gotta revel in the fact that their abrasive and idiotic fan base is no longer all over the boards puking up their trash talk, hijacking threads, whining and crying about not getting their just desserts... I find the relative peace and quiet most refreshing.

Yes we are going to watch the holiday games at home . NOT HAPPY. WE BETTER NOT LOSE TO AZ. It's not going to be fun

I think in spring practice, Carroll saw that Corp was nothing special. So he decided to use this year to get Barkley and his new linebackers some experience so they'd be even better in the next few years or so. Not rebuilding, exactly...more like playing for the future. I doubt he thought his defense would be this bad, though.

Even USC homers can't possibly think that this year's team is "great." You can say it's a great program, but this team is not great, and not even very good. Wouldn't it be just if Stanford, taking off at the end of the season, carries the momentum to become a perennial title contender - EXACTLY like USC back in 02?

Jim Harbaugh is so gone to either an elite program or the NFL in the next year or two. He might even be a darkhorse pick at Notre Dame, which would probably never happen but would be some crazy delicious irony.

Remember: THE CHILD's team LOST 4 games in '07 when he won the Heisman, while the young defense gained experience... then in '08 & '09 that group has been lights out
USC's defense (& new coordinators) are taking their beatings now and should be much improved the next two years
For now, Carroll will regroup during the bye week.

i agree. the sec (especially florida) are ALSO media darlings. mark my words, if florida loses to alabama they will still be in the national title game. oklahoma, when they had 3 losses, all were to ranked teams. and those 3 loses were by a combined 5 points and yet they drop into the twenties in the polls. usc loses by blowouts and/or horrible teams (remember stanford in 07....41 point favs) and drop 4 spots. gee i wonder where usc will be ranked in the 2010 pre-season poll? top 3 or 4 , when in reality it should be in the backside of the teens, if even that

mark my words if the gaytors lose the sec championship the the best team in the ncaa will play for the nc. the TEXAS LONGHORNS are the best team. the sec can lose to an unranked team at home and play in the nc game but TEXAS loses to #6 at their house and they cant play in the nc game. tblow in the heisman race is a joke it is suppose to be to the best player in college football so now they say it is for the best leader so he can stay in the race. what a joke, when you barely beat teams that are not ranked that is sec football great defense. when TEXAS barely beats ok in a rivalry game on a neutral field that is sloppy play. not one team has been better than the others this year but TEXAS. they will kick the sec ass
