Mike Leach is decidedly out of the running at Auburn, and with the Cap'n's ship remaining firmly in port in Lubbock, Tiger fans want Turner Gill. They need Turner Gill, because everyone else on the ever-shortening short list has either denied interest in the job -- Houston Nutt, Brady Hoke, Jimbo Fisher -- or, like Will Muschamp, Gary Patterson and Paul Johnson, seems hopelessly out of reach. Gill is the only plausible name that will seem like a step up from Tommy Tuberville; we know he'll will interview for the job this week at the Hall of Fame induction/schmoozefest in New York, and even the fans who come down against Gill agree he certainly looks the part, if his resumé is still a little short.

Other than Gill, well, the pickings are getting rather slim: The most prominent member of the buffet line into Jay Jacobs' suite at the Waldorf Astoria appears to be ex-Auburn quarterback/current Miami offensive coordinator Patrick Nix, who is, let's just say, not exactly the pick of the litter for the highest profile opening in the country.

I'll say this for Nix -- he did once do this in one of the greatest games I've ever watched:

But as an offensive coordinator? He's better known for moments like this. Nix's units at Georgia Tech and Miami since 2006 have ranked 67th, 110th and 88th nationally in total offense. Put it this way: Auburn's major rivals wholeheartedly endorse Nix as the Tigers' next head coach. Rodney Garner, too!

Otherwise, it's either Gill or holding out that Fisher, when waved an even more ludicrous sum of money than he's already promised upon Bobby Bowden's retirement at Florida State, is not a man of his word. And you are a man of your word, aren't you, Jimbo?

Hope he gets it, then we'll have 5 black head coaches out of 116 what a shame!

The Barn deserves to be in this pickle. Firing Tuberville is the act of a bunch of classless mulletheads - regardless of how much money they have to throw around.
    Maybe RichRod will listen.

It almost (i emphasize almost) feel for Auburn, mostly because the SEC and especially the West needs as many good to great teams as possible. Oh, the short-sightedness of the Auburn admins and their inability to give Tubs enough support to last out a year while they figure out his successor. Oh well, we'll just hang six or seven or twenty on them in the meantime.

usc needs a good football schedule next year. they have the top recruiting class year in year out so they might as well show case their talent. playing pac-10 teams all year wont get you into the natl championship.

That article proves that you don't have a clue about who is really in the running for AU head coach. It's as if it were written by a bammer. Are you a bammer

No one has a clue who's really in the running down on the farm. The search is being conducted by a bunch of chickens with their heads cut off.

Patrick Nix! Yes! Because what the state of Alabama needs is to see a white hero quarterback cum Florida-based offensive coach hired over a more experienced black candidate. That'd be unprecedented!

Actually, Kyle H., there will be the same number of black head coaches in the FBS as there are now. Gill would just move from Buffalo to Auburn.

Gill is a good coach. He should be considered for the job. I just wonder if his style of coaching will fit in the cutthroat SEC.

Aw I imagine anyone that played and coached at Nebraska during that era can teach a few things about cutthroat. The fact that you question that though means the guy is great at separating the swarminess of head coaching and the public image of wholesomeness.
