Oklahoma 27, Oklahoma State 0. Oklahoma State opened the season with visions of the best team in school history, and as far from that ideal as the Cowboys have looked at times -- as in double-digit losses to Houston and Texas and a lackluster win over struggling Colorado on national television, all at home, while losing their best player under bizarre circumstances and failing to beat a ranked team -- the big goals were all intact today. With a win over an injury-riddled, struggling rival fresh off possibly its worst defensive effort of the last decade, OSU could have secured 10 wins for the first time in 20 years, possibly punched its ticket to the BCS and set itself up for its first top-10 finish since World War II. Those are higher, more tangible stakes than Oklahoma State has had on the line post-Thanksgiving in decades, on top of ending a six-game losing streak to the hated Sooners.

They're certainly too high for anyone associated with the program, from high-rollin' sugar daddy T. Boone Pickens on down, to excuse this kind of performance -- not just because it's a loss, but because it's basically impossible to show up to a game and try and come out with zero points, zero third conversions and more penalties (six) than offensive first downs (four, two of which came via Oklahoma penalties themselves). The Cowboys punted on every possession except one, on which senior quarterback Zac Robinson was intercepted to set up a short touchdown, and didn't earn a first down in the second half by any means. Robinson's longest completion of the game covered all of 10 yards, and his final regular season snap ended in a sack, moments before Ryan Broyles added insult to injury with an 87-yard punt return to close the scoring and effectively commence the Brandon Weeden era for OSU's offense.

In other words, Mike Gundy's team had a chance to secure unprecedented spoils in Stillwater, and laid quite possibly the biggest egg of Gundy's five-year tenure. Have fun preparing for the Cotton Bowl, guys.

And on that note, welcome back to the big show, Boise State -- no schmoozing necessary. The Broncos' 44-33 win over Nevada Friday night effectively secured their fourth undefeated season in six years (barring impossible catastrophe against New Mexico State on the blue turf, where Boise hasn't lost in four years), and with it a certain BCS at-large bid, probably in the Fiesta Bowl. That slot might have gone to Oklahoma State, which could promise a bigger fan base for ticket sales and, based on past results, a bigger TV audience for sponsors. But since the Cowboys seem so uninterested in the trip, you can book the Broncos for another shot at one of the big guys.

if the mid-majors want to increase thier sos why dont they schedule a champs game between top two mid-majors at the end of each year. that would put them on par with sec, acc, and big 12 championship games

Merge the Mountain West and WAC - again. Then the 18 team megaconference can have a championship game - and TCU and Boise could decide for certain who deserves the BCS berth. And they might bounce ahead of the ACC, Pac 10 or Big East in the BCS eyes and get a permanent berth.

OU fans everywhere proud of that effort to try and redeem a season. No way they lose to Texas and OSU in the same year. This team was hit with bad luck as if someone broke a mirror or ran over a black cat or what not.
How ironic that OU helps Boise State in its BCS buster trip.

Boise is not going to a BCS Bowl game. BCS Bowl Games are for the 6 BCS conferences to keep all the money for themselves. Only reason BCS now takes 1 non-BCS team is to avoid litigation.
Why would the BCS Conferences give any of the $$ to anyone else.
BCS is not about fairness or any national championship-- BCS is by and for the benefit of the 6 BCS Conferences.
At 10-2 either Penn State or Iowa will be the 10th BCS team.

    matt,
interesting that you finally took down your notre dame/ weis/clausen bashing garbage. we all know that the big 12 officials never would have allowed oklahoma state to lose the game and those big extra bcs bonuses unless we had hit enough of them with our civil rico lawsuits.
the news must be getting around the conferences since conference officials failed to alter the outcomes of a number of games this week and took huge hits to their conference bowl revenue bonuses.
your window of opportunity to settle out of court will not be open much longer.

Jake - let's break things down some so you can LEARN something
    4 At Large Spots
    **Florida/Bama LOSER
    **TCU
    **Penn State OR Iowa
Who gets the 4th? Pac 10 runner up? NO! ACC runner up? IF Ga Tech - maybe - but doubt it
The ONLY WAY Boise gets left out is IF Nebraska beats Texas. Other than that Boise goes and gets the 4th at large spot
And it wouldn't hurt if you learned something before you post and post something as laughable as you did

Yahoo is amazing. Someone posts spams and stuff like that it stays up forever - I post something questioning Jake and Post #5 it gets pulled won. UNREAL
Jake - please tell us who the 4 at large teams will be if you leave out Boise
Can we agree 3 will be:
    Bama/Florida LOSER
    TCU
    Penn State OR Iowa
    Agree?
So please tell us who gets #4 if NOT Boise? The ONLY way I see Boise being left out is IF Texas loses to Nebraska meaning Nebraska gets the automatic invite and Texas would get an at large bid leaving out Boise. other than that - Boise is IN.
Agree and if not - please tell us all who gets the 4th spot
Here's hoping Yahoo leaves this post up because like the other one it does NOT violate any part of their guidelines and TOS

Whoa jake. Boise State and Penn Sate or Iowa can both go to BCS bowls. Ok State is out, and Pitt's loss to West Virginia takes Pitt out, unless Pitt knocks off Cincinnati next week. Unless it beats Cincy, Pitt will finish 9-3.

True that barring upsets, it is Texas vs. the Florida-Alabama winner, then the Florida-Alabama loser is good to go for the Sugar Bowl, with Oregon-Oregon State winner playing Ohio State in the Rose Bowl. Either Penn State or Iowa is almost sure to get an at-large bid, and TCU is a lock. The Pittsburgh-Cincinnati winner gets a spot. That leaves one spot for sure, but it will likely be taken from Boise State if Texas loses to Nebraska, and possibly if Cincinnati loses to Pittsburgh. Cincy would be 11-1 at that point, from a BCS conference, and would probably (in my opinion) get that slot. So Boise State needs wins next week by Texas and Cincinnati and then sit and hope that the BCS doesn't do something stupid like choose Virginia Tech, which has 3 losses but will likely be in the top 12, or Oregon (if they lose, since the Ducks might also stay in the top 12). How horrendous would the BCS look if they took a 3-loss Oregon as an at-large over Boise State, who beat them in the opener? I'm thinking the worst for the Boise and the BCS, but hopeful that they will somehow do the right thing. If the BCS takes a BCS school over Boise State without any upsets happening, I think Congress will finally stop sitting on their collective behinds and look into this thing. I sure do hope that's the case.

Make 8 conferences (ND doesn't want to join, they don't play for national title - period!!!). Each conference has 2 divisions. You play all the teams in your division every year. You play 2 or 3 games against teams from other division in your conference. You play 2 non conference games a year if you like. At end of season, the 2 division winners play each other for conference title. ONLY THE 8 CONFERENCE CHAMPS MOVE ON TO BCS. Math says there is 4 first round games, 2 second round games and 1 title game. Rotate this: 2 games for first round at Rose and FIesta. 1 semifinals at Orange Bowl and 1 semifinal at Sugar Bowl.
Kicker: National champion gets to host next years national title game. 1 - spreads the wealth. Imagine Boise State, Texas Christian, Utah or Cincinatti getting to host a national title. 2 - Weather becomes a factor. Imagine Ohio State or Michigan pulling out a national title. Now, your beloved USC's, LSU's, Bama's, Texas, Florida and Oklahoma have to come up north and prove they have what it takes to win a title in below freezing weather in front of 100,000 fans.
Seeding for BCS tournament will be done random - like the little ping-pong lottery balls.
Then, you can fill all the other bowl games with 2,3,4,5 and 6th place teams.
ITS THIS SIMPLE. NO MORE POLLS. NO MORE POLITICS.

Taking Justin's handoff, I think a playoff system is long overdue. The other divisions of college football have had playoff systems for *DECADES* (with probably just as many complaints about the student-athletes missing class time, etc.) and always seem to decide a true champion.
What other reason is there to play for anything if you're a two-loss team? Or how about a third, fourth, or maybe fifth unbeaten (such as we could have this season)? This season, it certainly looks as though we'll have two unbeaten teams vying for the national championship. Other than that, every bowl game is nothing more than a consolation prize, albeit some with very sizable paychecks involved. In other words, outside of the prize money, the bowls mean *nothing.* And before anyone starts in on tradition, the NCAA did away with all concerns for tradition by staging so many of these games after New Year's Day. I also don't recall watching the Outback Bowl on January 1 as a kid. The only "tradition" is keeping the money in the hands of the *traditional power conferences* (oh, and the "special school," Notre Dame).

Sorry cdsinc2000. Jake is correct. Boise State will not go to a BCS bowl unless there is absolutely no alternative for that 10th spot. Essentially, it has to come down to either Boise or a THREE-loss BCS Conference team. Even then, as I posted on another thread, I make it no better than 50-50 that they'll take Boise. The BCS will have to weigh what's worse: the scorn and outrage of virtually the entire nation and the threat of lawsuits and further Congressional hearings, or sending a whopping $10M to a "minor league" conference on top of the $10M that TCU is already costing them.
If there's a one-loss BCS Conference team (say, Cincy or Texas if they lose next week) or even a two-loss team (Georgia Tech, if they come back against UGA tonight but lose in the ACC-CG next week), they are bet-your-house locks to get that 10th spot. The question is whether a USC or Miami, who might jump into the Top 14 following all the upsets today, would be chosen over BSU, three losses or not. ("We're honored to have a perennial powerhouse like Southern Cal, and all their All-American, Future NFL stars, in the Fiesta Bowl this year!")

To #4. The only reason we have to listen to the hot air coming out of Idaho, is because the Sooners were sleepwalking through their game against BSU. If OU had actually cared, there would be no video game cover, no hysteria about BCS busting, no threats of lawsuits. BSU is a decent team, in a 2nd tier conference, with a freak home field, but two bowl wins against a team that clearly did not care proves little. I'm more impressed with Utah beating Alabama, although a ticked off Georgia crushing Hawaii is more the order of the day. Keep playing 2nd tier Pac 10 teams, Oregon was when this year's game was scheduled, try to play second tier Big 10 or SEC teams, and OVER TIME, BSU might become a real high profile team.

I live in Mobile, Al. (heart of SEC country), and I believe that the Broncos of BSU would kick either 'Bama or the Gators' butt. They were undefeated last year and ranked #9 and still were screwed out of the big show. This on the heals of b**ch slapping the Sooners in the greatest game of all time (college or pro). The powers that be desparately tried to exclude them again this year despite another undefeated season and #6 ranking. Thanks Ok St. for showing your true colors today. No denying them now. Boise will beat either Iowa or Penn St. like a drum and TCU will win as well, regardless of opponents. What now "privelidged six"? Time to send the fat cat, good ol' boy fraternity packing and give football fans what they want. Go Broncos. Go Frogs.

You sure about that, Matt? These are the same OSU fans who couldn't sell out their newly expanded stadium until Texas came to town on Halloween night. A string that includes last year's game against OU in prime time.
