When it comes to excessive celebration, some coaches think officials are a little too loose with their flags -- take Cal's Jeff Tedford, for example, who recently called the critical personal foul against Jake Locker in Washington's last-second loss to BYU in September a "ridiculous" application of the rule. On the other hand, there's Jim Tressel, who had a somewhat different opinion:

"If they err, I think they should err on the side of throwing the flag," Ohio State coach Jim Tressel said. "You're supposed to hand the ball to the official. A couple [of penalties] that were called were close, but guys see that and if they care about their team, they know to mind their Ps and Qs."

Obviously, if the Sweatervest was running the show, the era of the liberal officiating agenda would come to an emphatic end:

I still think that high-stepping* or diving* penalties should be marked off from the point of the foul, meaning you just lost your TD. If you dive into the endzone, that isnt a dead ball foul, 15 yards from the 3 yard line, back em up to the 18.
*Assuming you are going to call those penalties at all, Im okay with letting em go too. I just oppose it being a dead ball foul when it isnt a dead ball infraction.

I side with Tressel, but here's another question.
Why, in the NFL, do players celebrate like they just won Bill Gates' will, when celebrating is usually banned at every other level? You think it would carry over. Sure, I didn't mind the "California Quake" or "White Shoes" back when a celebration was usually fun or clever, now it's just some self-aggrandizing attention whoring designed to get on SportsCenter. (Please tell that to the gunner on special teams, who slips, falls, and the returner accidentally falls on him at the 45 and then immediately jumps up and starts pointing fingers like he tore the guys head off.).

Excessive celebaration is a penalty instituted as a way to avoid players to taunt each other. What more "taunting" exists than running up the scores? What more taunting you want to allow when you prize Florida scoring 70+ points against Kentucky or 60+ against Citadel? What more taunting that USC scoring 50+ points against Wash or 60+ against Wash St? If the NCAA desires to curb taunting among teams in College football, the first thing to curb will be running the score. Can these scores be avoided? It is hard to know but at least the pollsters should stop placing so much emphasis in such scores and eliminating them, completely, as a criteria to rank teams.

Reality is just wrong. Ohio State's standards are higher than almost all other public universities. Kids get suspended for missing class.
