What led police to arrest longtime Michigan sports columnist David Mayo on Tuesday? Could it be that he recently penned a column under the headline, "Florida-Oklahoma an unsatisfying end to BCS," in which he called the BCS title game "just another good game that would have looked equally attractive on a September Saturday," and has become the first target in a sinister, far-reaching conspiracy by conference presidents, university trustees, bowl sponsors, Rupert Murdoch, anti-Castro Mafiosos, ESPN and other nefarious BCS interests to systematically eliminate all opposing voices?
Or could it be that the 24-year Grands Rapid Press veteran turned himself in on a warrant accusing him of growing enough recreational marijuana in his home to be accused of two felonies worth up to nine years in prison, including a charge of "maintaining a drug house"? We may never know the truth.
In other marijuana news, college football was rocked by its first felony of 2009 over the weekend, when Oklahoma State's Bo Bowling -- whose personal MySpace page lists his mood as "Chill" -- was charged with three felony counts for possession of marijuana with intent to distribute, possession of a controlled substance (Xanax) and unlawful possession of drug paraphernalia (a digital scale). He was immediately suspended by OSU, which has no need for this variety of "possession receiver."
