Oregon 65, Oregon State 38. Hey kids, here's a swell plan for submarining your first Rose Bowl bid in over 40 years: Allow 51 points, 694 yards and 10 yards per snap to the opposing offense of your hated rival. Then throw them a couple interceptions they can return for touchdowns while you're at it. Voîla! You've blown your shot at the Rose Bowl.

The Beavers ranked 13th in the country and second in the Pac-10 to USC in total defense coming into tonight, and got gashed like they were Portland State or something. Oregon completed five passes of at least 30 yards and had two 100-yard rushers; Jeremiah Johnson ripped off 219 at 14.6 per carry, and Jeremiah Masoli averaged 16 yards per attempt -- not per completion (he averaged 25 per completion) but per attempt. If anything was going to knock the Beavers off-track, I would have guessed it would be the absence of Jacquizz Rodgers, not of every member of the defense. Just when everyone was actually beginning to believe in those scrappy kids and their sad little beards.

So welcome back, USC, to your annual date with the Rose Bowl, barring the most unlikely set of events yet in the now-long history of unlikely events at the top of the BCS. Ho hum. And the Trojans were so looking forward to New Year's in Tempe or New Orleans. Can't a monolithic juggernaut catch a break every now and then?

    @ Jorge D
I don't know if I'd call it a choke job. That spread package that they run in Oregon can put up huge numbers when run correctly (see Oregon Offense during Dixon Era).
And you're right. Overrated USC will probably, once again, clobber their opponent (Penn St.) in their BCS bowl game.

if USC is so overrated y do they always show up powerhouse teams? i personally wanted OSU to go to the rose bowl so USC could play a better team and smash them to get a top ranking in 09 season in route to BCS championship. OSU did well enough on offense though Quizz was out although the defense didn't do such a great job allowing such a whipping.

Matt, you don't know that much about the OSU/UO game. Even in the best year a team can loose to the team with the most passion. Both teams are winners in our state regardless of what outsiders like you think or say. The last ten years have been the best since both teams have been very good.

LOL @ USC bashing from an Oklahoma fan. Still smarting from 55-19, eh Jorge? Or have all of the BCS rapings you've taken this decade blend together? USC would beat BlowU again this year, no question.

OOOOHHH just thought of another thing about how bad the SEC is, the Number 1 team in the nation Alabama had to go to overtime to beat a struggling LSU team that won the national championship and then dropped to a 7-5 season.

SC beats them like a drum whenever they play. Sour grapes OU (55-19)

I wanna tell you who got screwed this season. PENN STATE. Sure they lost a 1 point heartbreaker to Iowa, but this team is in sync. This team could very well beat any team INCLUDING overrated Alabama!

it really doesn't matter what USC does the rest of the season. They could lose out, they will still be ranked extremely high next year, and will probably at one point be #1. But that happens every year. They are ranked #1, thought unbeatable and shoo-ins for the national championship game, and then they lose to a sub par Pac 10 team. Take your pick. I couldn't predict who they will lose to and screw it up. They're so talented, but they forget how to win the easy ones.

and comment 12, Casey P, you can't really say Alabama is overrated until they lose. To be the only team from a major conference with an undefeated record at this point deserves the #1 ranking, and that really can't be debated.

Penn State will destroy USC. It's not even going to be close. I'm glad its USC vs. Penn State. Chokehio State doesn't deserve to go to a BCS until they can prove they can win a bowl game. Penn State destroyed Oregon State during the season so this will be a good matchup. I don't like how the Rose is played right outside USC's stadium. Anyone else notice how they can't win unless its a Rose Bowl?

Jorge, weren't you the guy heading for the gate with 5 minutes left in the first half at the 2005 Orange Bowl? Adrian Peterson was a no show in that game, just like the new guy - Fred McMurray would be against the SC defense.

USC catch a break???? Are you kidding me???? They have amazing players but they keep on CHOKING TO UNRANKED OPPONENTS..... OREGON STATE TWICE!!!! UCLA!!!! STANFORD!!!!!
This is what I got to say, stop crying and whining...if they won all their games for the past three seasons....they would have been in the BCS championship game...but they didn't. They deserve to go to an uninteresting Rose Bowl....Maybe less people will watch and it will lead to a trend where people don't watch as much bowl games and thus there will be a need for a PLAYOFF....

personally, im not asking fora break. yes we did lose to the beavers. the punishment fit the crime. we deserved to fall the way we did.
Im in favor for a playoff, i would love to play and beat those schools who think they can hang with our defense.
Bring on WHO EVER! we do not play schools like Bowling Green, The Citadel, Central Michigan, Western Kentucky, Chattanooga, Florida Atlantic, Eastern Washington.
That list sounds like the NCAA sweet 16 basketball bracket. ........
Every team USC plays has some kind of football tradition/ great players that came from those schools/ conference champ.....
    Other Schools, DONT!

Yeah USC is real overrated, considering they have dominated every college powerhouse for the last 7 years, minus ONE great 4th quarter by Vince Young. I guess people are forgetting that USC also led the '06 championship game by 12 points with 6 minutes left, Texas hardly dominated.
And Sooner fans need to just STFU, they had no business playing against USC in 2005. That was a joke of a game.

I would hope that the Rose Bowl would choose UT or OU over Penn State. That would be a better match up though we still will not know who is really #1 this year without a play off.

Meshman: That's impossible, as the Big Ten and Pac-10 champions are automatically put in the Rose Bowl unless one is in the MNC game instead.
Oregon State still has an outside shot - if USC loses to UCLA (don't laugh, it happened two years ago), then it would be a three-way tie with both Oregon schools (each 1-1 against the others). The next tiebreaker would be record against the next-highest team (without breaking ties among the remaining teams), which would be Cal. Oregon lost to Cal, the other two beat Cal. So it would go back to OrSt/USC, and Oregon State wins the tiebreaker there.
