Houston Nutt ain't afraid'a no curse

Via e-mail, an Ole Miss fan wants to know: Does the SI cover jinx extend to regional editions?

At one point, Houston Nutt was trying to turn down the Rebel hype machine, which seemed like the route of a wise man, given the level of trepidation Rebel fans already feel about their unprecedented expectations this fall. They've already survived one of hubris' assaults this week, only narrowly escaping losing two of their best players in a vehicular fireball. This seems like a particularly inopportune time to tempt fate even further.

But you know, Sports Illustrated has an exceptional track record with preseason covers. Really: The Rebels are for real. See? Nothing happened. No, Jevan Snead, that is not a safe falling from the sky. You're insured, right? There's nothing to worry about.

That Ole Miss fan should ask the Detroit Red Wings about regional cover jinxes.

I cant wait until Nutt gets his recruits in there and Ogerons graduate. Hooray for Houston, he pulls off Danny Fords recruits and has a couple of good seasons....same thing will happen here. Ohh yaaaaaay for Houston Nutt....he was able to recruit inside of the state and get Darren McFadden. Yeah, ESPNs gay love for Houston Nutt will never end....but Ole Miss will get sick of mediocrity and 8-4 seasons.....

I've never seen this much preseason hype about a ballclub that will inevitably go 5-6.

    "inevitably go 5-6"
I do not know why I feel the need to respond to someone who does not yet realize that a college football season has twelve games, but please tell me who the Rebels' 6 losses will come to? I'm assuming you're assuming losses to LSU and Alabama so we'll move those out of the way. Now, with the remainder of the schedule being Memphis, UAB, SELA, Northern Arizona, Vanderbilt, Mississippi State, Arkansas, Auburn, South Carolina, and Tennessee I'll assume the first four to be wins (you are as well, just play along). So, out of the following six teams, you expect the Rebels to drop FOUR games:
    Vanderbilt
    Mississippi State
    Arkansas
    Auburn
    South Carolina
    Tennessee
That's a highly unlikely proposition. Sure, collapses happen. Clemson and AZ St. last season are example enough. It just seems a bit odd that someone who is so confident in their assessment of the Rebels (an "inevitable" six losses) would completely neglect to argue their stance.

ummm Catatafish, did you get your name from the song, "Johnny's Camaro?" In case you didn't keep up with recruiting at all, which from your post it sounds like you didn't, Nutt didn't recruit instate very well this year. Most of his players are from FL, TX or LA, which are much better pipeline states than MS. Your comments are a joke. They had the #15 class in the country, so I think the man can recruit. Orgeron left OM with sufficient DLs, but the rest of the cupboard is pretty bare. Keep your ignorant comments to yourself--you must be a bitter Arky (UPig) fan, I assume.

Yes Catatafish, I can't wait til we get back to the days of 3-9 and 0-8 in the conference. Oxford was never more electric. Good times, good times!

Catatafish, why is the fact that Houston Nutt getting some credit for a helluva season getting in your crawl so much? Do you hate him that much? What did he do to you? You sound like a very jealous Arkansas fan to me. If you are not, then you need to explain why so much hatred. If you think this hype is so overrated, then you have to do what any nay sayer has to do...put it on the field and back it up!!

Most Arkansas fans really do hate Houston Nutt, but it's not a jealousy thing as many would think and it has nothing to do with Ole Miss. Sure, we envied your great record last year but we've seen that before from him here (he won his first 8 games as our coach). However, his last 3 years here were mired in drama and he ultimately was the reason why our program imploded (in case you forgot the whole Mitch Mustain/ Gus Malzahn incident). We've also seen his teams be hyped in preseason publications only to fall flat (2006 he had 3yr starter at QB in Casey Dick, all-time leader in TD receptions in Monk, McFadden, Felix Jones, and Peyton Hills at RB...all 3 drafted into the NFL, plus an All-American at Center and they lost 4 conference games). Ultimately, his motivational act wore thin here and nobody mourns his departure. Will Petrino be any better? Maybe, maybe not...remains to be seen as neither is yet working with their own players, but Petrino has one thing Houston doesn't...a BCS ring. Hey, if nothing else it's revived a rivalry that had gotten pretty stale.

pokeman_bites hit it right on. Houston Nutt is a drama queen who always defies expectations, for better or worse. He's a really good coach but not quite as good as all the hype. Just wait until he "invents" a job offer from Nebraska or some other bigger school so he can squeeze more money from Mississippi.

I am Houston's son. For years he has tried to act like I am not, but it is true. My mother showed me pictures.
