• H.R. 599 lives! And if you don't believe it, you have a problem. As part of the push to get California Congressman Gary Miller's anti-BCS bill out of committee -- where it will probably die, along with its sister anti-BCS bill, introduced by Texas' Joe Barton -- and onto the House floor for a vote, a Web site of indeterminate origin has sprung up in support of "The Miller Plan." BCSReform.org, then, might be the first special interest devoted exclusively to lobbying Congress to implement a college football playoff, and it has enough going for it to secure college football Hall-of-Famer, All-American and member of the 1972 and 1974 national champion USC Trojans ... wait for it ... Anthony Davis! as its official spokesman:
Oh, this is a done deal, right? What Congressional committee could resist that kind of sophisticated lobbying clout? (By the way, is Anthony Davis being paid as a consultant or something? Because A.D. understood there would be a check, and you best believe he's not getting all K Street in here for free.)
• Take a hint, Carl. Florida offensive lineman Carl Johnson started nine games for last year's mythical champions and has probably been more successful with women than I was in college. Still, it's always good to know when you should take a step back:
University of Florida offensive lineman Carl Johnson was arrested Monday by University Police and charged with a first-degree misdemeanor for violating a sexual violence restraining order.
According to a UPD arrest report, Johnson, a junior, passed up several opportunities to get off a bus and waited for a woman to exit at the campus HUB.
The woman had been granted a temporary restraining order against Johnson, 21, a week ago, according to police.
Not to get all trendy here, but when she invokes the legal system to keep you apart, Carl, she's just not that into you. No word on the original incident of "sexual violence" that led to the restraining order in the first place -- no arrest was reported last week or in the wake of Monday's arrest -- or any pending response by Urban Meyer, who has a history of granting second chances.
• Recruiting drama, Chapter 3,769. The L.A. Daily News' Scott Wolf revives his role as recruiting sleuth in the case of Manti Te'o, which he's followed closely since the Hawaii star stunningly spurned USC for Notre Dame on signing day. The latest edition of the Te'o saga comes from Larry Hilliard, father of Dalton Hilliard, Te'o's high school teammate and a new UCLA Bruin, who confirmed to Wolf that UCLA dropped Manti's best friend, Roby Toma, in response to Te'o dropping UCLA because "a deal was struck":
Here is what Hilliard told me:
"[UCLA offensive coordinator] Norm Chow gives Dalton a call (last week) and says there's a lot going on with Roby (Toma). Chow said, 'Manti said we attacked Roby in regards to Manti not coming.'
"Chow said, "We were aggressive because a deal was struck.'
"Based on what Coach Chow said, Manti called them up and said, 'I have a buddy.' He told them if they gave (Toma) a scholarship, he would come. The caveat is he said, 'I want to keep it under the table and on signing date I'll make it public.' It's coming from Norm Chow. He did tell Dalton to ease Dalton's mind that they didn't do anything other than offering a friend a scholarship in hopes of Manti's coming to UCLA."
Toma, you might be aware, wound up at Notre Dame alongside his buddy, anyway, though no one has accused the Irish of engineering a "package deal" for the services of the linebacker.
