I don't want to be a spreader of half-truths and gossip, especially in an environment where the real truth lately has been more volatile and confrontational than I want any part of. But in addition to very confident message boarders ($) and a Memphis radio station, three different Web sites today are citing "a trustworthy source," "sources close to the Tennessee coaching search" and simply "multiple sources" that all source the same thing: Lane Kiffin will be announced as Tennessee head coach on Dec. 1, which is next Monday, two days after Phil Fulmer's finale against Kentucky.
The last thing the Doc ever wants to be in these matters is a sucker, so as far as I'm concerned, this still falls into the category of interesting but highly unreliable chatter; these sites are, in my professional estimation, totally sketchy. But it is out there. And if the photoshoppin', gun-jumpin' renegades of the Web are right, even accidentally, well, remember where you heard it first the next time your instincts tell you it's not true until it's on one of those "responsible" sites, you know, the ones set up by those things they used to print on dead trees.
And if they're wrong? I mean, it's the Internet. Of course they're wrong.
UPDATE: ESPN's Chris Low, who is totally a blogger (albeit of the reportorial variety), adds to the Kiffin fuel in his late afternoon mailbag without saying Kiffin is a done deal: "What I know to be fact is that Kiffin has already started talking to people about coming with him to Tennessee. One of those people is former Ole Miss coach Ed Orgeron." The Vols may be talking to other people, but Coach O, back on SEC sidelines? Now this gets interesting. Mildly frightening, and interesting.

No srsly it's getting ridiculous with every reasonably good coaching prospect not named Will Muschamp coaching somewhere in the SEC at this point.

Brent Hubb's who runs volquest.com was the one who reported yesterday that Mike Hamilton denied the rumor Lane Kiffin had been offered the UT coaching position, reported today that the official offer will come to Kiffen Sunday afternoon and Kiffen will be announced Monday. Kiffen will be bring Coach Ed on as Recruiting coordinator/DL/DC, and will attempt to bring his father Monte Kiffin as DC, also could try to steal his bro in law from South Carolina, David Reaves who is their QB coach and Recruiting coordinator. You can take that to the bank folks.

Kiffin will be a great head coach somewhere whether it's UT or not. I just hope he doesn't take the soon to be vacated job in Kansas City.

2. kiffin, like his mentor, pete carroll, of usc did pretend to be responsible for what the true genius, norm chow did at usc. it is no accident that usc, with more athletic talent than another other school in the us, has not won a national championship since carroll and kiffin got jealous and drove norm chow away from usc. unlike the pac 10, the sec will never be usc or the volunteers and the 9 or more other unknowns.
3. kiffin's followup performance has been a true reflection of his complete lack of coaching ability, player development, and maintaining any semblance of player discipline.
4. we sincerely hope that the volunteers do not cough up any big upfront money or long contracts.
5. after all, kiffin comes in with a very bad track record and it will not take long for the volunteers to realize this.
6. a healthy volunteer football program has always been essential to college football and kiffin is among the very worst choices that the volunteers, or any college or pro football program could have made.
7. in addition, a full refund if indicted or sanctioned by the ncaa clause would be a very good idea, given kiffin's involvement in the reggie bush( by no means over) and numerous other violations by the usc football program.
8. after all, just look at what happened indiana basketball when they hired an ethically and morally challenged head coach despite all of the warnings not to touch that coach.

What UT really needs to do is to start a global search for a new Athletic Director. The douchebag sitting in that chair right now is the root of the problems. Look at the time line. Dickey leaves, Hamilton arrives, UT football starts sliding. Maybe that can be Fulmer's next job at UT. I don't care if they bring in Tinkerbell as AD as long as it is somebody besides the loser we have now. All he has done is take credit for Bruce Pearl and Pearl had to actually call and ask for the job. Pearl found him, not the other way around.
