Dr. Saturday - NCAAF

I don't want to be a spreader of half-truths and gossip, especially in an environment where the real truth lately has been more volatile and confrontational than I want any part of. But in addition to very confident message boarders ($) and a Memphis radio station, three different Web sites today are citing "a trustworthy source," "sources close to the Tennessee coaching search" and simply "multiple sources" that all source the same thing: Lane Kiffin will be announced as Tennessee head coach on Dec. 1, which is next Monday, two days after Phil Fulmer's finale against Kentucky.

The last thing the Doc ever wants to be in these matters is a sucker, so as far as I'm concerned, this still falls into the category of interesting but highly unreliable chatter; these sites are, in my professional estimation, totally sketchy. But it is out there. And if the photoshoppin', gun-jumpin' renegades of the Web are right, even accidentally, well, remember where you heard it first the next time your instincts tell you it's not true until it's on one of those "responsible" sites, you know, the ones set up by those things they used to print on dead trees.

And if they're wrong? I mean, it's the Internet. Of course they're wrong.

UPDATE: ESPN's Chris Low, who is totally a blogger (albeit of the reportorial variety), adds to the Kiffin fuel in his late afternoon mailbag without saying Kiffin is a done deal: "What I know to be fact is that Kiffin has already started talking to people about coming with him to Tennessee. One of those people is former Ole Miss coach Ed Orgeron." The Vols may be talking to other people, but Coach O, back on SEC sidelines? Now this gets interesting. Mildly frightening, and interesting.

No srsly it's getting ridiculous with every reasonably good coaching prospect not named Will Muschamp coaching somewhere in the SEC at this point.

I would suggest that cricket noises will meet that announcement, but I think they'll be too busy giggling at the prospect of Orgeron the Destroyer on the sidelines of UT to chirp.

    Here's the scoop,
Brent Hubb's who runs volquest.com was the one who reported yesterday that Mike Hamilton denied the rumor Lane Kiffin had been offered the UT coaching position, reported today that the official offer will come to Kiffen Sunday afternoon and Kiffen will be announced Monday. Kiffen will be bring Coach Ed on as Recruiting coordinator/DL/DC, and will attempt to bring his father Monte Kiffin as DC, also could try to steal his bro in law from South Carolina, David Reaves who is their QB coach and Recruiting coordinator. You can take that to the bank folks.

I do not know much about Kiffin. But living in Michigan and seeing what Brian Kelly has done at Grand Valley State, Central Michigan and now at U Of Cincy. I think he would be a steal for UT. He probably now will end up at ND if Kiffin is Tenn. man
    Go Vols!

lane is not the right pick for ut......sure he was oc at usc but not during the nc run ....chow was. Washington is looking for a new coach...they are pac 10 and have no interest in kiffin at all...not even a whisper of they want him
so what does washington know that tenn does not.
tenn needs proven...power....big conf experience...and champ to be able to recruit and return ut to fame and glory
only two names are leach and davis....maybe peterson from boise st...not proven in big conf but can coach

none of the talked about candidates have really proved themselves...you mentioned Davis and Leach...ok I'll give you Davis when he was at the U but Leach? that's bordering on funny...the guy was at Oklahoma shortly and then Kentucky as an OC but as head coach his record is mediocre at best...We do not want the spread at UT...we can't get the talent to run it and one of the selling points for recruits to come to UT is its pro style program...a gimmick offense and coach will ruin that...lets not get crazy here, Kiffin has grown up around success and football...he knows how to win and if the rumors are true I'll welcome him with open arms.

as a hawg fan, i hope kiffin doesn't end up at UT because he's got some serious football smarts lol. he'll be a good pick, but dang, the SEC is loading up on good coaches again & it's going to get even more difficult to get a team in the BCS championship game in the future. oh well, may the SEC continue to dominate!

Razor is right. Al Davis never gave Kiffin a chance. Kiffin Had substandard at best receivers and basically a rookie at QB. McFadden got hurt in his stellar performance week 2 and it took him 8 weeks to get right. Tell me how any of this is Kiffin's fault. If he had been given the reigns like it's suppossed to be and had a real GM to act as a buffer between coaching and managment (Davis) Kiffin would have had that boat righted already. Instead they are flailing around trying to find chemistry with 1 good reciever, one of the best running cores in the league and quite possibly the most talented QB in the league. No wonder Kiffin was making Russell play a game of protect the ball every week.
Kiffin will be a great head coach somewhere whether it's UT or not. I just hope he doesn't take the soon to be vacated job in Kansas City.

For those saying Lane wasn't with USC during the NC run...he was at USC from 2001-2006, I'm pretty sure thats when USC REGAINED their swagger in the Pac-10. He was sharing the play calling w the quarterbacks coach during 2005-06, two of their most prominent years, remember that unBELIEVABLE NC game vs Texas, and He was doing the recruiting with Ed O. I think he has plenty of big program experience at USC plus he can recruit out west, which is where UT recruited during the 90's when they were 48-5 in a 4 year span. Bring him on, I think he's plenty qualified and I'm excited to see what He can do for us. GO VOLS

    1. our condolences to the volunteer players, recruits, students, and fans for their ad's picking such a proven disaster as their next head coach.
    2. kiffin, like his mentor, pete carroll, of usc did pretend to be responsible for what the true genius, norm chow did at usc. it is no accident that usc, with more athletic talent than another other school in the us, has not won a national championship since carroll and kiffin got jealous and drove norm chow away from usc. unlike the pac 10, the sec will never be usc or the volunteers and the 9 or more other unknowns.
    3. kiffin's followup performance has been a true reflection of his complete lack of coaching ability, player development, and maintaining any semblance of player discipline.
    4. we sincerely hope that the volunteers do not cough up any big upfront money or long contracts.
    5. after all, kiffin comes in with a very bad track record and it will not take long for the volunteers to realize this.
    6. a healthy volunteer football program has always been essential to college football and kiffin is among the very worst choices that the volunteers, or any college or pro football program could have made.
    7. in addition, a full refund if indicted or sanctioned by the ncaa clause would be a very good idea, given kiffin's involvement in the reggie bush( by no means over) and numerous other violations by the usc football program.
    8. after all, just look at what happened indiana basketball when they hired an ethically and morally challenged head coach despite all of the warnings not to touch that coach.

Nebraska hired a former Raiders coach (Bill Calahan) who was fired by Al Davis not too long ago. Bill did nothing but caused pain for the Huskers program and was fired again. There is something to think about hiring former Raiders coaches especially the way they moved out of Oakland. Of course, Al Davis isn't the best owner in the NFL world, but he wants what everyone else wants...Superbowl. Kiffin didn't deliver there and got the pink slip. The Vols should hire someone who could take them to the top of BCS and not sitting at home during the Holidays.

Lane Kiffin was my first choice. He will be a winner. As to Orgeron ... fugitaboudit. He is a loser on and off the field. As defensive line coach at Nawlins, he is a nobody. If Houston McNutt is a huge improvement (and he was) then Ed O should be coaching 9 year olds. If it is necessary to replace Chavis, bring on Pappy Kiffin! There are plenty of defensive choices. Go get a good O type to balance the staff.
What UT really needs to do is to start a global search for a new Athletic Director. The douchebag sitting in that chair right now is the root of the problems. Look at the time line. Dickey leaves, Hamilton arrives, UT football starts sliding. Maybe that can be Fulmer's next job at UT. I don't care if they bring in Tinkerbell as AD as long as it is somebody besides the loser we have now. All he has done is take credit for Bruce Pearl and Pearl had to actually call and ask for the job. Pearl found him, not the other way around.
