What do these guys have in common? They're all descended from famous fathers with football cred. And they haven't gotten fed up and walked away from football entirely (yet). With the sudden departure of John Elway's son, Jack, from the team Arizona State, making headlines, we're checking in with other notable scions of the NFL making it into, through or out of the college ranks.
Celebrity Spawn: Nate Montana, Notre Dame quarterback; and Nick Montana, hot commodity
Sons of: Joe Montana, Hall of Fame quarterback
Lowdown: The elder brother, Nate, pledged allegiance to dad's alma mater by walking on at Notre Dame last year, and has yet to see playing time. Nick is a highly regarded quarterback prospect as a high school junior at the glitzy Oaks Christian School outside of Los Angeles, where he succeeded current Irish starter Jimmy Clausen as starter and currently plays alongside the sons of Wayne Gretzky and Will Smith. Last season Montana threw for over 2,400 yards and 33 touchdowns, which, along with his name and high-profile locale, has earned him more than a dozen offers to date. Among his alleged frontrunners: Alabama, Georgia, Southern Cal and Tennessee.
Celebrity Spawn: Jerry Rice Jr., future UCLA Bruin
Son of: Jerry Rice Sr., unmatched receiving icon
Lowdown: The son of perhaps the greatest player in NFL history is slated to walk on at UCLA this June, where there's plenty of room for a potential playmaker on one of the most anemic offenses in the country. Between his lineage, the lure of Hollywood, and the close proximity of 49ers fans, he'll have plenty of distractions, but seems prepared to take it all on, saying, "People are going to talk. Instead of overreacting, or giving a reaction at all, I let it go in one ear and out the other." As long as that doesn't apply to his coaches, he'll be fine.
Celebrity Spawn: Mikhail Marinovich, defensive end/entreprenuer, Syracuse
Son of: Marv Marinovich, ex-Oakland Raiders lineman, enthusiastic father
Lowdown: Mikhail is overshadowed by his infamous brother, Todd, the flashy ex-Southern Cal quarterback who started doing pushups as a fetus under Marv Marinovich's obsessive regimen, flamed out as a pro and has subsequently faced a half-dozen arrests for possession of marijuana, cocaine, heroin and methamphetamine and another for sexual assault since leaving USC in 1991. 20-year-old Mikhail, a likely starter for Syracuse this fall, is putting his obsessions to more productive ends: He and an Orange teammate opened a hooka bar near campus last November.
Celebrity Spawn: Mark Ingram Jr., Tailback, Alabama
Son of: Mark Ingram Sr., former New York Giant wide receiver
The lowdown: Though he's been held out of spring practice with a hamstring injury, Ingram The Younger seems poised for a bright
future with the Crimson Tide, coming off a freshman season as the
team's second leading rusher. He wrapped up 2008 with 728 yards on 143 carries and 12 scores, just as his dad, one of the stars of the Giants' win in Super Bowl XXV, was being apprehended.
Celebrity Spawn: Clay Matthews III, Linebacker, Southern Cal
Son of: Clay Matthews Jr., Four-Time Pro Bowl linebacker
Lowdown: The younger Clay was originally a walkon at USC in 2004, but sits today just weeks away from becoming the fourth member of the Matthews clan in the NFL, following his father, his grandfather (Clay Sr.) and his ncle, Hall of Fame offensive lineman Bruce Matthews. Clay III seems destined to join fellow Trojan linebackers Brian Cushing and Rey Maualuga in the first round despite the anonymous (and quickly countered) steroid accusations against Matthews and Cushing last week.
Celebrity Spawn: Matt Simms, QB
Son of: Phil Simms, Super Bowl XXI MVP, CBS talking head
Lowdown: Louisville's freshman phenom missed the first four games of 2008 due to the ever-popular and mysterious "suspension for violation of team policy," which was not actually that mysterious. Simms spent the remainder of the season in a backup role and saw snaps in two games. His stats: 4 of 10 passes completed, 39 yards, one interception. In January he left the team for junior college in California, but don't tell that to whoever's running his fansite.
