Wasn't there a movie set in the future one time wherein the son of a generally despised professional sports owner, among other nefarious doings, started a company to broadcast football games in 3-D? And this was evil because it distracted the masses from the owner's plan to destroy the environment for personal profit and other real problems of society or something, and Michael J. Fox or somebody from a wiser past or a more rational future had to time travel to teach the 3-D-obsessed world to love again?

Am I making that up? Because that's totally about to happen:

Thanks to an impressive—though not glitch-free—test broadcast of an NFL game two weeks ago, Burbank, Calif.-based 3Ality Digital said Tuesday it had won the contract to shoot the Jan. 8 BCS National Championship game in 3-D.

The game between Florida and Oklahoma will be broadcast live in 3-D to 80 to 100 movie theaters in about 30 U.S. cities, said 3Ality Chairman David Modell [son of Browns/Ravens owner Art Modell and former Ravens president -- ed.]. Tickets are expected to cost $18 to $22, said Cinedigm Digital Cinema Corp., which is working with 3Ality to deliver the broadcasts to theaters.

OK, so I don't know about the Modells' plan to pollute the environment or (allegedly) ship all kittens to the Arctic to be devoured as the last meals of polar bears as the final crystals of ice melt beneath their paws, but 3-D football clearly has the potential to thrill and terrify, if done correctly. 3Ality's previous runs on the technology, for last year's NBS All-Star gam and a random Thursday night game between the Raiders and Chargers two weeks ago, had quite a few bugs but drew generally good reviews (at least the glasses were cooler than the flimsy 1950s version, though you had to keep them on at all times). If you want to know if a theater in your city is one of the 100 included for the championship 3-D-cast, well, too bad, because the alleged link to that list is currently broken. New York and Los Angeles, despite barely recognizing the existence of college football in Oklahoma and Florida, are your best bets if you absolutely have to have Tim Tebow crashing through the line into your face, causing you to duck and scream like a girl.

If you're more patient, this is just another good reason to hold off on the HD TV: You knew you'd just be replacing that someday, too, and now you know with what.

The link to the list is broken, but not the website. Remove the trailing dot and it works fine... at least for me.
The amusing thing is... I checked, and I'm all but certain that it won't be playing in Gainesville, Florida. You know, where you'd be pretty much guaranteed to sell out.

Discouraging HDTV spending with uneducated banter on a popular blog during this financial crisis is....questionable

There are plenty of tvs out there that support 3D already. My Samsung does. the display switches between images for the left eye and the right eye, and there is an IR pulse to let the special glasses know which eye to block.

Interesting that movie locations don't make good business sense. Old man Modell could screw up a good thing as well. Sounds like David is a chip off the old block.
