Chase Daniel didn't look like the same quarterback for the last few games of Missouri's season -- in which the Tigers finished with back-to-back losses to Kansas and Oklahoma and a lackluster overtime win over heavy underdog Northwestern -- and the outgoing senior offered a plausible explanation why to the Columbia Tribune: He was playing with an injured thumb on his throwing hand for at least the last two games, and possibly longer. Daniel is quick to attribute his dropoff in production and increase in interceptions to "bad decisions" and downplay the effects of the injury, but he did have to wear a cast following the Big 12 Championship game and adjust his grip on the ball while undergoing treatment. That's what he hopes NFL scouts pay attention to, anyway.

Because the other possible explanation for Daniel's late struggles is the upgrade in the defenses he faced: 10 of the Tigers' first 11 opponents finished the season ranked 70th or worse (in the bottom 50 nationally) in pass efficiency defense, and Daniel's numbers against those teams were reminiscent of the dominant stats he put up on everyone in 2007 and that had at least some pro scouts intrigued. But add his effort in the Tigers' October loss at Texas (No. 59 in pass efficiency D) to the final stretch against Kansas (No. 69), Oklahoma (No. 46) and Northwestern (No. 25), and Daniel turns into a very average quarterback, very quickly:

Keep in mind that "Top 70" is not exactly a high threshold; Daniel was very mediocre against just mediocre secondaries, and against the only one that qualified statistically as "above average," Northwestern, he threw three interceptions in by far his lowest-rated game of the year, and needed a punt return by Jeremy Maclin and a stronger-than-usual defensive effort to have a chance at the win in overtime. Most of Daniel's positives against Texas and Oklahoma were with the game well out of hand; Mizzou trailed by 30-plus points at halftime of both games.

I couldn't care less about Daniel's draft stock, but his "legacy," as it were, is lower in my mind at the end of this season than it was at any point over the previous two. Really, I'd prefer to remember him as the insanely accurate master of the four and five-wide, no-huddle spread who couldn't miss in the freezing, winner-take-all game with Kansas to close a spectacular, unconscious season in 2007. So if Daniel's not willing to attribute his late slide to a thumb injury, I will: Get better soon, big guy.

Oklahoma State defense held him in check and that was a home game! I can understand having tough games at Texas or in KC for the Kansas and Big 12 title game against OU. Heck even the bowl game is in Texas not exactly a home crowd but Oklahoma State doesnt have the best defense in the country so what they did was expose him to other teams. Sorry Chase you were a good college player and will be a good scout team QB in the NFL. You have to feel good that at least you wont be a punching bag like Stafford or Bradford, if he comes out, for the Detroit Lions! Maybe you could be a 3rd stringer for the Patriots or Cardinals so you can learn from some good Veterans!

i loved his college game, but i doubt he plays at the next level. he doesn't take snaps from center, he's short, he's accurate but not exceptionally strong, and the plays he makes with his legs will be negated. i hope i'm wrong, but i don't think he'll even be signed as a free agent. still, as someone who lived in missouri until recently, i loved his college game!

He was a great quarterback in college. He will play at the next level, but it may take a couple of years for him to fully develop into an NFL QB.

If the right team with the right offense picks him, he will be fine.

He peaked in high school (coincidently when he stopped growing). He can be a good leader (when things are going his way), reads defenses well, has a knack for making plays with his feet, but most of his "big" wins came when he had strong players around him who played well. His style of play might work well in Canada, if they even still play ball there.

#10 was not the best player on his own team (Maclin). He was not the best passer on his team (Patton). Daniel was not even the best "Chase" on his own team (Coffman). There have been a myriad of good college players that produce when surrounded by excellence, but they rarely succeed at the next level. How about the fact that he had a spectacular offensive line? He could take shots down the field knowing he had the greatest kicker in the history of college football behind him. His 70 yard TD passes were misleading when Maclin makes it happen all on his own. Don't give me Heisman consideration as evidence of his greatness either, because that award couldn't be a worse barometer of NFL stardom. (see Jason White, Troy Smith, Eric Crouch)
Let's look at much more likely possibility: CHASE IS NOT A GREAT QUARTERBACK!!! He throws a below average deep ball. He fumbles the ball. He folds under pressure more easily than Marc Bulger.
2008 Big games: Oklahoma State (L), Texas (L), Kansas (L), Oklahoma (L). I am a huge Mizzou football fan, and I am glad to see that self-promoting wannabe gone. Good riddance, CD. Hope you got a degree from MU along with your collection of backwards hats and awesome celebratory handshakes.

i like chase but his deep ball sucks. His knowledge of the spread and a good team around him made a good college QB. He should get into coaching. F KU

He is an average QB. His problem is that he folds under pressure very easily. If he gets picked in the pros he better hope to be a benchwarmer for either manning or have a great teamaround him becuase he will end up like Culter after this season. I agrre Northwestern should ahve won.

Chase Daniel was the most overhyped QB in the country, heck Missouri was the most overhyped team in the country. They beat nobody. They got thumped by Texas and Oklahoma. As long as Chase Daniels was a QB at Missouri name a good college football program that he beat. He wont sniff the NFL. And yes he is a baby and has an excuse for everything. Plus he picks his nose on National TV.

I think Chase is a very competitive QB, very much the spark of the Tigers. The numbers are too inflated, when you stand 7-9 yards deep in a shotgun every down, then throw to the first guy open, your stats are going to be good, Having a 1st round NFL pick like Maclin helped "alot". He seemed to criticize the opponents alot, win or lose; didn't think that resembled a great leader, at all. In any case I'm glad he's gone, as the "Husker s"should roll in Columbia next year!!
