Tebow gazing from the proprietor of Tim Teblog.

A year ago, Tim Tebow had the finest -- and defining -- moment of his career: "The Promise." Following Florida's stunning home loss to Ole Miss, Tebow took the media podium after the game and delivered an impassioned speech that went something like this: "I promise ... yada yada yada... to lay waste to everything en route to a national title. God bless."

At the time, it was a testament to the depth of Tebow's competitiveness and commitment that he would stand in front of the media and not just represent the team's bitterness over the loss -- but his personal sense of responsibility for it. Over the next 10 weeks, it would become college football legend. It's already enshrined on campus.

On Saturday, we experienced the "Bizarro Promise," and Tebow experienced the worst moment of his career despite the Gators' win at Mississippi State. It had nothing to do with his worst-ever statistical performance (12-of-22 passing, 0 TDs, 2 INTs). It had nothing to do with either of the pick-sixes (two!) into the arms of MSU's Johnthan Banks, which kept the Bulldogs and their cowbell-clanging fans in the game despite their predictable offensive struggles against the top-ranked UF defense. It had nothing to do with his inconsistent on-field decision-making.

No, the low point was after the game, when Tebow offered no speech, no "Promise." In fact, he ducked the media entirely, the first time in his career he had never addressed the press following a game when healthy, win or lose. His presence after yet another unimpressive victory was glaringly missed -- and shockingly out-of-character for a star whose outsized persona is built as much around "leadership" as anything he accomplishes between the hashes.

Here are the things Tebow could have said:

• "Wow, you're right: One touchdown in six trips into the opponent's red-zone is unacceptable."
  • "I recognize that, in retrospect, I am allowed to throw the ball away."
  • "Yes, despite all appearances, I have complete faith in my receivers."
  • "I was as shocked by that 100-yard pick-six as the rest of you."
  • "So how about our defense, huh? Those guys are sick."
  • "Did you see me under center? And...? TD!"
  • "Scoreboard. We're 7-0."

He did not have to stand up there and give a reprise of his after the Ole Miss loss. Something like "I promise you'll never see a team work harder to score touchdowns in the red zone" would have been fine. But with the palpable frustration spreading through his struggling offense, the have to stand up there and say something.

If Tebow is nothing else, he is a leader -- we can argue about whether he is the greatest player in college football history (or, yes, even the best player in the country this season), but most folks are willing to stipulate that he is college football's all-time personification of leadership. By not facing the media, Tebow shirked that responsibility.

According to the AP, Tebow said he skipped the media session to hang with Mississippi State's coach, Dan Mullen, his old offensive coordinator at Florida. While I appreciate that, there is no reason he couldn't have done both; he was photographed hanging out with Mullen even before returning to the locker room.

I appreciate that Tebow was likely frustrated to no end about his performance, and the performance of the offense, in general. But, as with press conference following the Ole Miss game a year ago, Tebow owed it to the team, the fans and the media to talk about the game. Even if he didn't want to.

On the one hand, it is a testament to Tebow's career that something this seemingly banal would mark the low point of his college football career. (After all, Florida did win the game and remains on track to defend its national title.) But on the other hand, it says something about the standard Tebow has set -- even demanded -- for himself that this huffy silent treatment would feel like a far bigger let-down than anything he could have done on the field.

"According to these guys, Jesus is undefeated. Meanwhile, these losers are in last place. They never mention [God] when they lose. You never hear anyone say 'Jesus made me drop the ball;' 'The good Lord tripped me up on the line of scrimmage.'"

Obviously, no one is good this year, so the national title will automatically default to 9-3 LSU after they beat (or lose to, it doesn't really matter) Iowa in Pasadena.

Hmm. Who knows why he skipped the presser? I find the explanation that he wanted to hang with Mullen convincing, but then, as Matt wrote, it's not like that means that he couldn't have gone to the presser too.
My problem with this post is the muddled explanation of why Tebow's required to speak to the media in this instance. Yes, last year he made "the promise," after they *lost* the game. Did he set the world on fire in this game? Nope, but he played well enough to win, and so did his offense (barely) and defense (who deserve a great deal, if not most, of the credit.) What, exactly, did he have to explain? A below-average game (with respect to his performance) in which the offense scraped by and the defense sealed the deal? Yes, an explanation would have been nice, or some sort of comment, but to read into it these dark notes of shirked responsibility is a bit much.
As far as the victory being unimpressive, this is perhaps true with respect to statistics. But the Gators went into a venue which they hadn't won in 24 years, and won with a small-but-visible margin of error to spare.
It is possible, in fact, that this years' Gators team is not as good as last year's. Certainly I think that's true of the offense. It's possible that they're going to falter soon, that the dropoff from last year is going to catch up with them. But I find a lot of these discussions have in common a frustration of writers' desires for a grander narrative moreso than an accurate representation of the team's performance. They don't have to be as good as they were last year, as long as they're better than everyone else this year. And this year, they beat Miss. State.

PurdeMatt got it right! Tebow does not 'owe' the media anything. Nor does any other amateur athlete! Just because the media gives him glorified names or hypes him all the time, they think he owes them. Ok, you guys- we understand that this is your living. But when did society start to think it is acceptable for all Media types to start acting like paparazzi? Is there ANYONE else you can write about besides Tebow, Tennessee and USC????
So what do you want Tebow to say? Coulda, woulda, shoulda? Mississippi State sucks and we should have beat them by 100 points? Or, what everyone outside the SEC despises, ‘The SEC is the best conference and it is hard to get through a complete season without a few hiccups?”. I think that Tebow’s silence says a lot. I also believe his explanation and I support him for wanting to spend time with an influential person from his past. (I know what you are thinking, and no, I am a LSU fan.) And, hey, Mr. Shanoff, you still got an article on him- so stop whining!!!!!!
Let me get this off my chest in response to earlier responses. Texas sucks! Florida sucks! Actually, everyone this year in college football sucks. I don’t see a dominate team this year. This is truly the year of College Football parody- which isn’t necessarily a bad thing. Maybe my Tigers can still win it all. Only time will tell.

actually #3---he would be a pretty good one...not a return. You see, in football, we have returners and blockers or we have kickers, lanedrivers and head hunters...obviously you are the tinysack that doesn't understand football. Not everyone is a returner cumwad.

I think Shanoff unwittingly hit the nail on the head. I don't think Tebow is healthy. He hasn't been the same since he got his head caved in against Kentucky. He should have been rested at least a month after something like that. He wasn't and so he probably still doesn't know whether he's coming or going.
That and what the other guys said; he doesn't owe the media or any of us anything. And we don't know what he owes or has delivered to the men in the locker room with him, but I'm guessing he's more than met their expectations.

correct that tim tebow doesnt owe the media anything, but when he does well or is making some bs promise he takes every opportunity he can to get in the spotlight. why else would he do GQ this past summer or every other interview he has ever done for a magazine. he has been nothing special this season bar games against charleston southern and troy where anybody can be someone special. it is his own fault he is being criticized for skipping out on interviews. i hope uga brings them down this week because they suck, and it would show how overrated this florida team is

Hey, jo mama... Up until now, Tebow has accepted every media cal he could possibly grant. Even the reporters griping about the snub admit they are mostly miffed because this is the FIRST time this has happened. So YOU come along and make like this is an everyday occurrence. Why don't you just go back to your trailer and keep drinking... Making intelligent conversation is obviously not on your skills list.

Tebow laid the foundation for his criticism. This love fest with Tebow has gotten beyond out of control. Now a story on how he didn't talk to the media, and how horrible of a decision that was? Really? Who cares!! He's not god, he's not the president, he's not the best QB in the nation, let alone in Florida. He's on a football team that has alot of great players AND is in a system designed specifically for him. Obviously Tebow's amazing numbers last year were more of a product of Harvin and Murphy. Can't dispute that. This season, ESPN commentators and almost every other sports writer are still saying he's the Heisman leader. Why? Because when the game counts, he shines? What did Tebow do in the 4th quarter in the last game, a game UF was supposed to dominate? 1-4 passing for a total of 3 yards, a pick for a TD, and 4 rushes for a total of 11 yards. Against a very sub-par defense. FSU's QB Ponder's numbers demolish anything tebow has done except for rushing TD's. The only difference is the love fest with Tebow and the fact UF is 7-0 and FSU blows, well at least on defense they do. But an even greater travesty than UF still being #1 will be Tebow winning the Heisman. What arguments do you have against either?
