Dr. Saturday - NCAAF

Boise State 19, Oregon 8. This sort of thing -- an optimistic, quasi-darkhorse team falling flat on its face in every phase of a big opening game -- happens all the time. In the last six years alone, Auburn (against USC in 2003), Boise State (at Georgia in 2005), Cal (at Tennessee in 2006), Oklahoma State (at Georgia in 2007) and Clemson (against Alabama last year) have all blown huge reserves of preseason goodwill in lopsided week one flops that completely deflated expectations for the rest of the season. It's pretty much an annual thing for somebody.

But as thorough as some of those losses have been, I have never been as stunned by a debut as rotten as the egg Oregon's offense laid in the first half tonight. Just consider how good the same team were once it found its rhythm in Chip Kelly's offense last year: The Ducks won six of their last seven while averaging almost 500 yards and 43 points per game, including three straight 500-plus-yard games against Arizona, Oregon State and Oklahoma State in the last three, roughly corresponding to the scorched-earth attack Kelly orchestrated before Dennis Dixon's season-ending ACL injury in 2007. This offense ended the year averaging in the neighborhood of 10 yards per play; tonight it averaged 3.4. At one point in the third quarter, it was averaging 0.9 and still hadn't gained a first down. There's a long way to go to find that rhythm again.

What was really startling when you look at the final score is that it actually should have been a lot worse: Boise outgained the Ducks by more than 200 total yards, picked up 22 first downs to Oregon's six and missed two field goals. It wasn't tricky and it wasn't a fluke -- the Broncos not only looked like the sharper, better-prepared team, but were clearly the more physical team, which was not something you could have predicted coming in. In that sense, this may have been a more legitimizing win than the feel-good, trick play-laden Fiesta Bowl upset over Oklahoma three years ago. Boise will very likely be ranked in the top 10 next week, and has never looked more like it belonged there than it did in the first two-and-a-half quarters tonight.

But more on Boise in the morning; the story of the night (aside from LeGarrette Blount's postgame outburst) is how an offense that had eight 300-yard rushing games last year and went over 200 on the ground against every single opponent except USC could possibly be held to 31 yards on 1.4 per carry by a WAC defense replacing almost its entire front seven. There are some issues there -- issues in the preparation that led to the catatonic start, issues in the sloppiness that cut short a possible comeback effort when Boise got loose with the ball in the second half and issues with Blount's inexcusable thuggery after the gun. Until we have reason to think differently, all of that adds up to issues with Chip Kelly in his transition from coordinator to boss, which could not have possibly gotten off to a worse start.

The poor coaching and preparation by Oregon was evident as was the lack of discipline shown after the game. This team is in real trouble.

    1. but for pete carroll's demolition derby practices, the injuries resulting from them, and sanchez brilliant move to escape from petey and usc and move on to the nfl, the pac 10 would have been another boring season of usc and the 9 dwarfs.
    2. oregon did look terrible against boise state.
    3. however, we will still take oregon and quite a few other pac 10 teams over usc in the 2009 and future seasons.

Am I the only one who actually watched the Boise State / Oklahoma Fiesta Bowl?
Sports writers like Hinton, here, always talk about the "trick plays" in that game. Yeah, there was the incredible endgame sequence with the hook & ladder, WR pass and Statue of Liberty, no denying. But that stuff was only *after* an entire game of pretty basic football... and Boise stayed with Oklahoma the entire time. Actually, Boise had it pretty well in hand till late, and then a bad Jared Zebransky pick-6.
Anyway, point is: this "physical" Boise State team isn't a new thing, exactly. They've been winning the WAC, running up 10 win+ seasons, going undefeated, etc., for a while now, and mostly they don't run the Statue of Liberty.

Both teams looked bad. Neither was a BCS-caliber team and if it weren't for the ineptness of the UO offense all night Boise State would be the one's on the negative side of the W/L Column tonight.
In regards to Blount: I'm not trying to defend the kid's action nor should he escape some sort of punishment. But after seeing it live and reviewing some of the video...Boise State should be ashamed of their players and fans. A lot of taunting and while Blount was being restrained (and from the looks of the video what set Blount off at the end was one fan yelling a particularly bad word. Not just a simple swear but an epithet) one of the fans reached over and smacked him across the face.

I forgot to add that if Blount is faced with some sort of discipline that fan who smacked him should be as well. If he's a season ticket holder he should have them revoked.

Blount brought on the heckling himself, since he was the one that said Oregon owed Boise State an asswhooping, only to rack up 8 carries for -5 yards and a safety.

Blount needs to be suspended and removed from the team immediately. The kid is a complete joke. Punching someone on national TV? Shoving your teammates? Going after fans? Having to be restrained by a coach down the tunnel? Blount's behavior was a joke. He'll never play a game again for Oregon.

Hmmm....I guess taking the high road is a concept they don't get in Boise. I'm sure Blount was embarrassed by the play of him and his teammates. Evidently Chris Peterson knew something was said because he grabbed the player who got hit before the punch was thrown.

I have to agree with post 18. Even though there was some trash talking from the guy that he punched, it was not worth Blount throwing a sucker punch as the guy turned away. If he plays another game for Oregon, ever, the NCAA should be ashamed. I'd rather a kid cheat on a test than to be allowed to sucker punch someone and get away with it. At least cheating causes no physical harm. Anything less than being kicked off the team and banned from Division i football is unacceptable. I would say the same thing if it were a player on my favorite team (Oklahoma). I would not want a guy like that on my squad. It's one thing to sucker punch an opponent. It's another to try to go into a crowd, which I wish he would have. Those country boys probably would have taken him to the woodshed. But that would solve nothing either. SUSPEND HIM PLEASE!!! PLEASE NCAA, Do something right for once!!!!!!

Come on Matt, use the Phil Steele Phorce. Oregon was starting like 4 new guys on the o-line. All their best blockers were gone. Plus Blount-of-2009 appears to be about a quarter of the back Blount-of-2008 was, and didn't have JJ-of-2008 spelling him.

This retired coach has seen much worse on the practice field between team mates. It doesn't make it right, but these guys are juiced at technical levels similar to combat troops. Suspend Blount accordingly and move on! It is football imperfection!

Wow, what a kick to the nuts for the Pac-10. I thought Oregon was supposed to contest USC's dominance this year. Scratch that, besides Blount is done, no way he's still on this team next week.
