If the dour assumptions about Dan Hawkins' future are any indication, Colorado can expect a wave of turmoil and departures over the next few months, beginning today with the exit of the most highly-sought recruit of the Hawkins' era:

BOULDER — Sophomore running back Darrell Scott informed his coaches Tuesday afternoon of his intent to leave the University of Colorado football program.

Head coach Dan Hawkins said Scott, a 6-foot-1, 220-pound tailback from Ventura, Calif., is leaving for assorted personal reasons and assumed he would be transferring closer to his Southern California home.

Scott is expected to follow his uncle and fellow Colorado exile Josh Smith to UCLA, where the former phenom's demand for a fresh start will find a team in desperate need of a productive workhorse in the backfield. Physically, Scott obviously first that bill: He was the top-ranked running back and one of the highest-rated incoming players at any position in the class of 2008, coveted by USC and Texas and everyone else, and despite his burgeoning "bust" status represents almost as much of a coup for Rick Neuheisel (if Scott in fact lands at UCLA) as he did for Hawkins two years ago.

Scott is emblematic of Colorado under Hawkins: Lots of hype, but only the exceedingly rare flash of promise amid an expanding desert of disappointment. He was reportedly out of shape as a freshman and spent essentially all of his CU career battling injuries and a losing battle with the depth chart behind solid but unspectacular classmate Rodney Stewart. Scott leaves with 459 yards and one touchdown, scored in his first game as a Buff, and as a walking emblem for a program that hasn't been able to meet expectations in years.

I'm a Colorado alum, and I'm madder than all get-out. Not at Scott, though. If I were in his position, I'd do the same thing. He's a great talent, and playing on a team with a coach who does not know how to use that talent is a waste. I hope he has much success wherever he decides to go. What I AM mad about is why on EARTH does Dan Hawkins still have a job? The guy is clearly not the reason Boise State had as much success as they've had. Hawkins has had plenty of time to take this program somewhere, and he's failed to do it. I don't make a six figure salary, but you can bet that if I so blatantly failed at my job, I would have been fired a lot sooner than this. Thanks, Chicken-Hawk for making our program the joke of the Big 12. I bet even Baylor could beat us, now!

The reason so many freshmen want to play right away has got to be strengthened by reasons such as this. If things are not going well, a transfer is in your best interests. If that's the case, one must sit out a year at the university you transfer to. If you still have a redshirt season to burn, that works out. If you don't have a redshirt, you're losing another year of eligibility...

I am so relieved that Texas did not get this guy...I think he is over-rated but will probably be a star in a consistantly weak PAC10.

John C, The consistently weak Pac-10 that beat Ok State in the Holiday Bowl?
Or the Pac-10 whose teams are not afraid to schedule a competent non-conference team (unlike Texas, a total abomination to non-conference scheduling)? Oh, that Pac-10

Lauren B, I completely agree with you. Dan Hawkins maybe got good personalities though he doesn't fit to BUFF nations. Go Broncos.

No way Scott could play in the SEC if he couldn't even start at a poor program like Colorado. You have to wonder about the heart of any player afraid of competition.

herbert, you have an awfully short memory. Wasn't it Utah.....UTAH!!!....that just beat the daylights out of Alabama? Maybe the Pachyderms didn't have enough Texas players on the squad?
At any rate, this Colorado defection clearly didn't occur because of the mayhem at Colorado....considering he's transferring to UCLA. It's clearly just because he wants to be closer to home.

Texas is Ohio State-ishly overrated, thier non-con schedual should barely even be considered and most of the Big 12 powers (Texas A&M, Texas Tech, Nebraska, Missouri) are rebuilding/retooling while the others (OU, OK State) have been plagued with injuries and suspensions. Until playing Missouri, Texas has not looked all that hot playing in what is a battered and bruised Big 12.

He showed up as a freshman out of shape? Sounds like an ego case...thought he could waltz in and be the starter. I'm sure his poor attitude about playing second banana also hurt team morale.

OK, it's obvious the Big 12 is overrated like the SEC, ACC, & Big 10. Any SEC doubters need look no further than UCLA's win over Tennessee followed by Tennessee's near wins over Florida and Alabama. And, we also all remember what Utah did to Bama in the Sugar Bowl last year. TCU is the best team in Texas. Oregon would whip any Big 12 team and look what Boise State's Broncos did to the Ducks. As for the Big 10, when its leading team needs a last second break to nudge Northern Iowa, an FCS school, by one, you know they're in trouble.

Dan Hawkins was fine when he coached at Boise State because he didn't have to gameplan for teams that actually had any talent. Boise's schedule is a joke, year in and year out, and Hawkins (like Dirk Koetter before him) just found out what it takes to recruit, coach and compete with the big boys every week instead of once a year. When Boise decides to play somebody they don't have an entire offseason to prepare for (say, somebody other than UC Davis or Tulsa in the middle of their schedule) we'll find out about the charade that's currently Boise State Bronco football.
The failures of Koetter and Hawkins just underscore what most folks that are paying attention already know.

OK, GaryB and what has UCLA done for you lately??? I think that Cincy and TCU are the best teams in the country right now and they should have the opportunity to play for the National Championship. Boise State should get the nod over USC for a BCS bowl bid because they beat Oregon and Oregon spanked USC. USC also lost to a team that's won 3 games out of their last 22 games . I think by sending USC to a BCS bowl game at this point would be rewarding bad performances and ignoring teams that have accomplished and excelled in the sport. If USC gets a BCS bowl bid over the quality teams that go undefeated then we will all know that the system is a mess and definitely needs to be changed.

Colorodo, is not the only school in the little eleven league, that has this coaching problem, it appears that over 2 thirds of the eleven has a big problem, some are trying to work on their problem, but most are not, the little eleven is the most pathetic conference in the nation right now. And the biggest problem in my opinion is the low profile of coaches that these schools have hired. As far as DH, it appears that the real Boise State Coach is still at Boise State, this coach really impresses me. Still trying to be an OU fan. I really hope to see a whole lot better performances next year, and I hate saying wait until next year, but at this point I do not see how we have any other choice.

you can't use fallacious reasoning like "oh UCLA beat Tennessee who almost beat Florida and Alabama, so the Pac-10 must be WAY better than the SEC." if we use that same logic then look...oregon lost to boise. boise should have lost to tulsa. tulsa got beat by utep. Utep was murdered by texas. So that means texas could destroy boise and oregon. while this is probably true it's not logical.
