Dr. Saturday - NCAAF

So it turns out the umpire who delivered the much-clicked hit to Stephen Garcia at the LSU 5-yard line during Tigers' win over South Carolina Saturday is no stranger to bringing down ballcarriers in the open field: Wilbur Hackett Jr. was a Parade All-American out of Louisville and a three-year starting linebacker at Kentucky from 1968-70, where he was the first black captain in SEC history. The conference won't say whether Hackett will be back on the field this weekend, per its usual policy, but he won't be facing any discipline:

... the SEC office believes Hackett was protecting himself and plans to take no disciplinary action on the veteran official. Rogers Redding, the conference's coordinator of football officials, reviewed the tape of the play and thought it was inadvertent contact.

"Garcia changes his direction just a tad, which ties up the umpire just a tad and makes it look a lot worse than it really was," SEC spokesman Charles Bloom said.

Of course, we didn't have to wait long for the inevitable evolution of one of the most-viewed YouTube clips of the weekend:

It should be noted that the impact of this gaffe on the game was zero: Carolina scored on a 4th-and-1 dive a couple plays later to go up 17-7 heading into the half, after which they punted four times and turned the ball over twice en route to blowing the lead. USC held the ball for all of 2:13 in the fourth quarter, losing seven yards on seven plays. Rather than worrying about any complaint, the Gamecocks will be spending their time this week figuring out the blitz after giving up a season-high six sacks.

How can one think this was an accident??? He clearly stepped up towards the ball carrier, dipped his shoulder and put it into the QB. WHAT PART OF THIS IS ACCIDENTAL? The SEC should rethink letting this clown off the hook...

If the guy had some sort of mental snap and the conference is covering for him, then I have no problem--we all make mistakes, and to confirm what really happened would do little more than make the guy's life a living hell, and to benefit no one and nothing. But, there is absolutely no way that was inadvertent.

Am I the only one that finds this clip hilarious? Go Dawgs, but holy wow! Yeah that wasn't an accident. You protect yourself by leaning into the QB?

Tough to controvert the facts-which are that the ref squared up and laid out Garcia. Chalk it up to some sort of strange karmic-balancing meted out by the universe for Garcia's love of hippie lettuce. Damn fine TV irrespective.

i cannot believe the SEC is blowing this off. Not only was it wrong but he was the aggressor. This ref ought to be fined and suspended for one game. he is part of the field of play. you dont see the grass popping up and tripping someone. he should have taken a passive approach. that is part of being a ref in big boy football. anyone can get in a shot when the other person is not expecting it. The sec officials should be ashamed of themselves calling this part of the game. Cheaters

The ref obviously had a (very) little instinctual light go on inside his head that said, "MAKE THE TACKLE!!" before this play occurred. He is out of position for an umpire and he THREW his shoulder -- that was NOT a defensive move. Typical SEC refs though -- the most corrupt and inept in the nation, and that's saying something when you look at the Big 10 and ACC. I'm not even a fan ... but this one is obvious. And, no, it's not fake -- I watched the game.

Since he once played for Kentucky, maybe he was getting revenge on Garcia for leading that big 4th quarter comeback to beat the Wildcats last week?

The Ref clearly looked right at the ball carrier and went directly into him. "on purpose" you'd have to be blind to see it any other way.

A touchdown was still scored like 3 plays later. LSU beat SC. No harm was done besides that qb Garcia's bruised ego.

Give the referee a 6 pack of bud light and 6 weeks off from work. i think he needs some time off to figure out whether he is a ref or one of the players.

what a joke... accident? he lined up as a third middle linebacker, spied the qb, then laid the guy out. the ref was just proving that he still has what it takes. the fact that the sec is just blowing this off, proves that they are the biggest joke of them all. what a farse. i'm not a sc fan, lsu fan, sec fan, big 10 fan, i'm a college football fan. this is a black eye on all of div.1 football. the ncaa needs to step in and handle this. regardless of the out come of the game this was a blatant tackle, and should not go unpunished.

could you imagine if this was done on 3rd down, his stupid actions would have changed this from a potention touchdown to having to go kick a filed goal, talk about changing the score and helping out vegas, this guy clearly either lost it or had it out for this team or QB and no action will be taken, could you imagine if this was usc or ohio game? this guy would be working at foot locker

I do agree the he was squaring up for the hit however if you read the article he used to play football. His instincts told him he was about to get hit and he was in the wrong place on the field and that wrong time and he squared up to try and absorb or take the hit. Yeah he was shoulder first but that is an football instinct. One that field u have very little time to get ur ass out the way. Its move or be moved. I dont think he came into that game with the intention of trying to take out a player. Anyone who thinks that is really Nieve and might need to considered keeping there closed minded opinions to themselves.

to add to this, i think someone should go run this ref over in his next game, just flatten him and then say oh i didnt mean to hit him im sorry it was an accident, im sure that player would be penalyzed, and suspended and even more thrown out of school.

sibbles, if you watch this video and you watch this ref, had he stayed right were he was he would have been fine he followed the qb and moved foward towards the play not away, he clearly moved towards this QB, he has been doing this for a long time your going to tell me he was in the wrong place at the wrong time? he was standing on the hash mark then moved foward and sideways towards the QB. then he stepped foward and lifted his arms as if he had a flashback to his playing days not as a 60 year old ref trying to avoid getting his bell rung.
