Dr. Saturday - NCAAF

It's behind a pay wall, so odds are you can't read it, but the Worldwide Leader's top-25 countdown is at No. 21, North Carolina, with the somewhat provocative suggestion that Butch Davis has already brought the Heels "into the realm of a potential powerhouse" heading into Year Three A.B. ("After John Bunting").

The narrative probably goes something like this: Davis has cast off the Bunting-era chafe with two top-20 recruiting hauls in the last three years, an infusion that lived up to the "youth movement" hype by doubling its win total from four in '07 to eight last year and returns in the neighborhood of 17 now-seasoned starters. UNC spent a good part of last October and November in the polls and generally figures to open this fall as a fringe top-20 team -- a pretty substantial leap for a program that averaged just shy of four wins in Bunting's last five years.

Look closely at Carolina's five 2008 losses, too, and they look even more like a team on the brink of a legitimate breakthrough. Aside from the weird collapse against streaking N.C. State in late November, four losses by a combined nine points -- in each of which UNC had a better game on a per-play basis -- is serious bait for seekers of the elusive darkhorse:

At least three of those games, and possibly all of them, could have gone the Tar Heels' way with better ball security. But the blocking and tackling, the athletes, on a down-by-down basis, they seemed to be there.

However: If you're going to take account of margins separating respectability from possible greatness -- especially when it comes to the notoriously fickle fate that usually accompanies outlying turnover margins -- you have to ask yourself this question, too: What kind of team manages to go 8-5 while being outgained by 64 yards per game? For some context on that number, UNC played 10 teams last year that finished with winning records. All but one of them, Maryland, averaged more yards per game than it allowed, and the Terps' deficit (14 yards per game) was nowhere near the Tar Heels'. The only two teams in the ACC that missed bowl games, Duke and Virginia, both stacked up better than UNC in terms of yards gained vs. yards allowed. Minus-64 yards per game is the mark of a bad team.

So: Since when does "outgained by the widest margin in the conference" add up to "steadily moving forward"? Once again, when one number tells the story more completely than any other:

It is a positive sign that Carolina stacks up much better in per-capita terms (yards per play) than in total yards. It is not so positive that it apparently required such generosity to eke out wins over very middling outfits from Miami and Notre Dame, or that, minus the giveaway/takeaway advantage, the Heels weren't that much better than McNeese State and Duke, which both had leads well into the third quarter.

As Athlon points out, last year was the first year the Tar Heels finished with a positive turnover margin since 1999; what if that trend reverts to the norm this time around? More records like the Heels have put up since 1999?

Not that Carolina doesn't have a real shot at knocking off Virginia Tech and/or the Coastal Division's other young up-and-comer, Miami, en route to a really special year. But short of a miraculous, Cincinnati-like run to the BCS, the trajectory of this program might be better measured in how well it's able to increase its margin of error -- i.e. overcome turnovers and other mistakes -- by actually outplaying people on a down-to-down basis, rather than in the final record.

"the Coastal Division's other young up-and-comer, Miami" ??? Huhhh? Why is Georgia Tech never thought of as a legit "up-and-comer" in the coastal? They've beaten Miami 4 years in a row. It's always amazing to me how bad the college football world desires to see Miami rise again to put the football world back in proper alignment. Just curious. Maybe you don't think of GT that way because they're already at competing at the top of the coastal, so "up-and-comer" doesn't give them proper credit.

Doen't matter UNC is not a football school and never has been. GT will win the coastal if they can get the fumbles under control. GT-FSU ACCCG count it.

The Tarheels have a very good chance to do a lot of good things this football season. They play in the ACC to start. The conference doesn't compare to most of the major football conferences. If the recruiting stays the way it has, North Carolina will start to dominate the ACC. GO HEELS!!!!

The ACC does indeed compare favorably to other football conferences. Look at the stats against other conference teams. One other thing, Tar Heels, not Tarheels will make themselves known this year I believe. Go Heels!

The Tar Heels amassed less yards because of special teams play. They had a great punter and cover team, good punt returns and kick off returns and coverage. So they played with a shorter field and opponents played with a longer one.

Uncle Grandfather, how long has it been since GT has been relevant in any sport much less football? Jealousy is ugly. Butch Davis rules and you are soon going to find out who has a "football" school as well as a basketball school.

The Heels may be good in 2010, but the loss of those receivers from last year's team will make them easy to defend and one-dimensional in 2009. Without the vertical threat of those playmakers, the defensive-minded ACC will stack the box taking away the run. I expect the Hokies to have a field day with the Heels late in the year, at home, and on Thursday night, good luck with that. Close last year, but not this season.

It wasn't a collapse against NC State...it's called being taken to the woodshed by a better team. TOB will make it 3-0 against Butch Davis this year and the Wolfpack will be playing in the ACC Championship game. TOB Butch Go Pack!

Robert D.. Yes the ACC had the most in bowls, but they were for the most part lower tier bowls and they most certainly did NOT have the best bowl record. They were 4-6 with no marquee wins over anybody good. Their "best" win was FSU over Wisconsin (the other wins were over Nevada, Navy, and Cincinatti...such powerhouses...NOT). Their losses were to Vandy, Cal, Nebraska, Rutgers, West Virginia, and killed by LSU. That is hardly a Resume to be proud of. Please research before you make such foolish comments.

VT and GT will finish ahead of Carolina in the division. The Heels will finish 8-4 again; good, but not good enough. Then Butch Davis, the hired gun, will be off to Notre Dame (if they drop Charlie Weiss) or some other big program after the season concludes.
    Go Deacs!

Good luck, DeacFan. Say it enough and it will happen, right?
As opposed to most UNC fans hoping Grobe would stay because a good WF team makes the conference better and makes for a more exciting season.
Funny how NCS and Wake would rather UNC take a step back rather than for their programs taking a step forward. Typical ABCers...

Everyone talks about the receivers that left UNC, but what about the great ones that are coming in this year. Dwight Jones, Josh Adams, Greg Little, and Jhay Boyd are going to give opposing coaches some headaches. Our running will improve. I hope the biggest improvement will be in our play in the last few minutes of the game. Hopefully, better depth will translate into better play at the end of games. Good teams do not lose games in the last minutes.

Butch Davis is NOT a great coach. He's not really even a good coach, and his conitnued record at UNC will start to show it, just like every other stop he's had (check out NFL record and his Miami teams, and that his former assistant had to lead UM to their championship with Davis' recruits.) However, He is a GREAT recruiter. That's the reason the Heels will be competitive in the ACC. Sorry Heel fans, he will compete, but he will never take take you to the championship level. He will always be out-coached by many of his ACC peers (see Frank Beamer, Paul Johnson, Jim Grobe, Tom O'Brien) Yes, Heel fans, you have great recruits, good facilities, a credible program, but you do NOT have a great coach.

First teams create opponents turnovers. I'm sure that the majority of QBs don't throw many in practice or fumble a lot in practice or they wouldn't be playing. UNC's turnover weren't flukes they didn't grease the ball to cause fumbles. Their ints were from FILM studies and jumping routes.

Well UNC does have an experienced secondary. They were 3rd in the nation in INTs last year. Plus they are returning 9 starters on defense and have most of the 2 deep coming back and some pretty good added depth coming in. The D will be much faster than last year with the slowest linebacker running a 4.5. We'll miss Goddard in the secondary but his replacement is faster, and Paschal leadership will be missed but we're gaining a much more athletic linebacker to replace him.

uncle G what do u mean never was a football school? did you foreget about mack brown and all the stars he had on those teams the only team that could beat them wuz FSU when they were dominant. other than that we went to southern call and johnson and johnson rad all over them plus the qb stansbach or whatever racked up yards. we beat alabama when they were real good under stallings we use to beat vtech before they joined the acc. if "dick" had of signed mack we would've already had a national title even 2 or 3 but he didn't want to pay mack the money so he left. so get your facts together man oh and we have the lb that changed the pro game forever come here L.T.
