Somebody in South Bend must know what this is all about:

But if they do, they're not telling:

Most people might assume that the Linebacker bar right below the billboard is behind this; but the general manager of that establishment says that is simply not so.

"It just happens to be a coincidence they have the billboard over the Linebacker Lounge," Greg Delinski said. "We have nothing to do with having that billboard up there."

The South Bend Tribune couldn't get an answer from the owner of the billboard space, either. Maybe it's one of Weis' old NFL colleagues' way of letting him know that, when he finishes his mandatory stint with the plebes, a job will be waiting for him and his decided schematic advantage next year in the pros, where they know real Xs and Os. Quoth the coach: "Welcome to my world."

Whoever it is, at least they're wishing him well.

[UPDATE, 6:03 p.m. ET, Sept. 2]: The South Bend Tribune follows up with the culprits: Ex-ND player turned marketing professor Tom Reynolds claims to represent 50 former Irish players, and concludes, "By definition, a good football coach does not lose games when he has superior talent on the field." That's just your opinion, Tom.

Why not borrow an idea from Texas and fly a plane over the games that says, "You suck Charlie".
I don't think it matters much. Notre Dame will win 6 games and Charlie will waddle off into the sunset.

I hate Charlie WEis and ND as much as the next person but this is weak sauce. Whomever paid for the sign should grow some balls and put his name up there.

I agree, ND time as a CFB powere is long gone, but it doesn't mean that former players or alumni can be children and put up something as immature as this stupid billboard. Chucky Weis could care less what his players think, much less some group of old alumni. So if they were trying to get a jab at the ole boy, this was a terrible failure.

Why are college and pro teams so obsessed with Bill Billacheck proteges?
Weiss Crennel Mangini and McDaniels (who has turned a proud franchise into a laughing stock without coaching a single game) are all failures

I thought at first it was from a Penn State fan (isn't that Linebacker U?).
Weis is a good schemer (spelling) but not a good coach. He will win 6 games this year and get fired so he can go back to the NFL and produce as a great coordinator. Not a big deal...

Hey ND supporters, keep Charlie the Genuise Weis as long as you like. That way each year the rest of us can be assured that ND will only win 6 or 7 games. Ty Willingham wasn't good enough, and this guy had done what?? About the same??? Interesting.

The real question about Notre Dame by the Lake is who gets the hatchet in the annual Notre Dame by the Lake Blame Game if South Bend Mommy has a sub par season, or doesn’t win the BCS Championship?
Answer-Notre Dame Alumni-Regis Philbin, Mike Golic, Hannah Storm, Lou Holtz, Digger Phelps, Dick Vitale, and others-in favor-receive a Blue & Gold Blame Game waiver.

Wow! All you ND-hating losers need to get a life! The fact is Notre Dame will probably never be the football power it once was as long as they have academic standards for ALL their students/athletes. So I'll take 7 win seasons because I'm cheering for a class organization. It's just a game boys.

notre dame and nbc deserve exactly what the are getting--assuming that they are better than all of college football by refusing to belong to any conference, nbc signing this has-been school to an exclusive contract, firing willingham when he was every bit as good(bad) as ch wuss, insisting on keeping this terrible mistake of a coach long after the rest of the world realized he was crap--gotta love it!!

Should also wish good luck to Jimmy Clausen on winning his third straight Heisman and possibly tying Ron Pawlus's record of 4 Heisman's.

I love to see the Irish suck. Loved Charlie in New England. Love him even more now. This is one school that needed and got a serious comedown. Welcome to the real world kids.
