Dr. Saturday - NCAAF

Back at the end of September, Boise State hit No. 5 in both major polls, and a round of stories came out wondering, "Wait a minute -- can Boise State play for the national championship?" The consensus then was "No," because of the Broncos' sketchy schedule, and with the scorn of the BCS computers dropping Boise all the way to seventh in the latest standings (last among the nation's seven unbeaten teams), nobody is even asking that question anymore.

In fact, with a remaining lineup of Louisiana Tech, Idaho, Utah State, Nevada and New Mexico State diluting the Broncos' strength of schedule even further and keeping them firmly off the national radar over the last five weeks of the regular season, the WAC is shilling for a public relations firm to help keep Boise in the mix for any big-money game, period:

The role of Scott Peyron & Associates is to keep Boise State in the forefront of the minds of the media. It does not lobby voters or coaches. It does email a weekly list of talking points regarding Boise State's accomplishments to members of the national media. It also sets up interviews for WAC commissioner Karl Benson and prepares statistical information for him to use to make a case for the Broncos.

"We've found that people just want to go back to the Fiesta Bowl win in 2007 and talk about that being a fluke and haven't really done their research in terms of [Boise State's] home game winning percentage or other interesting facts over the years," said Doug Cole, a group practice leader with the firm.

Boise may be right to be worried: If the rest of the season plays out as expected, the Broncos will forfeit the lone automatic BCS bid for high-ranking non-"Big Six" teams to TCU; assuming the SEC runner-up is assured of landing in one of the other three at-large slots, that potentially leaves Boise to fend for one of the other two against heavyweights USC, Notre Dame and the winner of Saturday's Ohio State-Penn State showdown, any of which is capable of overcoming the Broncos' advantage in the polls with guarantees of big ticket sales and TV ratings (and the WAC's history with at-large opportunities suggest the bowls will go for the sure thing). If TCU keeps winning, even the highest ranking in school history won't guarantee Boise a berth. But maybe the Peyron and Associates can bridge the gaps the ranking in and of themselves cannot.

This has been a persistent issue for Boise State in the past, of course (see their BCS snubs behind undefeated Utah in 2004 and again last year, when undefeated teams were relegated to the Liberty and Poinsettia bowls, respectively) and will continue to be until it buffs up its non-conference schedule enough to overcome the always dicey WAC slate -- a tall order when most prestigious opponents want nothing to do with BSU, for obvious reasons. The Broncos are opening up next season against Virginia Tech in Washington, D.C., but have no "Big Six" conference schools on their 2011 schedule and seem to be running into walls in every direction in their effort to add one. Either way, frankly, if the same walls are still standing after four unbeaten regular seasons in six years and arguably the biggest regular-season win in school history this year, over Oregon -- and there's a good chance that the Ducks might eventually jump BSU in the polls if the keep winning, as they already have in the computer polls -- I can't imagine a realistic scenario in which they're going to come down.

Hmm, so they need a game against a "Big 6" and simultaneously need to get attention late in the season after waltzing through cupcakes. So... someone form the Big Ten? It's not like any of those schools are playing late in the year, amirite?

So they were relegated to the Poinsetta Bowl last year. Did they win or lose that bowl game??? As I recall, they LOST. SO WHAT IS THEIR COMPLAINT? Is anyone else sick of these mediots bolstering up these wannabe teams?

Uh, instead of paying money to a PR firm, why don't they just guarantee a BCS bowl that they'll buy an ungodly amount of tickets? That's what the bowls care about.

So this is why ESPNU ran the story about WAC officials being reprimanded from the BSU/SJSU game? Just trying to get Boise's name in the news.

The win over Oregon was nice, but I would bet just about anything that Oregon would win that game by 20 points if they played again this weekend. Even if the game were in Boise.
But don't want to disrespect BSU. They do what they are supposed to do, Win. But I have heard different reports that they turned down games with the big boys. Heard USC tried to schedule them...but I don't know all the facts.
If they want more respect, they are going to have to schedule LSU, Texas, USC, Florida...etc.. or try and join the Pac 10 somehow.

A claim of 10 "no"s from Big6 conferences for a 2011 date. Does no one see the problem with a claim about 2011 when defending their 2009 schedule? Teams get asked all the time for games only to say "no" because the schedule doesn't match or their schedule is already full. Who is to say some of those 10 teams didn't have a valid reason to say "no"?

I think that they have a valid point - the simple fact is that the BCS setup is intentionally unfair, and is designed to put money into the coffers of the Big Six.
It seems (and it's only "seems" as I haven't done any real analysis) that any argument in favor of keeping BSU out is an argument in favor of the way that the BCS does things - which is sure-fire gonna get you run out of town if you do it for any reason other than to dis Boise State : )

Hey, they got you to write about them, didn't they? It's working out for them already.
And it's quite possible that instead of Boise vs. USC, or Boise vs. Notre Dame, the decision could be Boise vs. Iowa (if Ohio State wins out), or Boise vs. Miami, or something else. And then maybe the publicity will help.

For a counterpoint, TCU has scheduled AQ BCS conference teams on a regular basis for the past 6 years, with very good results to show for it.
HOWEVER, in order to get some of the marquee games, they have had to rearrange the schedule with their other opponents, which results in some potential match ups falling by the road if re-scheduling is not possible.
Hence the fill-in games against the D-2 type teams, (U Cal Davis / Tex St), that drop their SOS.
The problem is real, but I sincerely doubt that BSU could not schedule even ONE AQ BCS game in 2011.

The problem with the out of conference games is there is a team that is in 1st place that also has a weak schedule and yet they are in the hunt for the bcs until sat.

Play more than 1 game a year Oregon this year ... so what Boise don't play but 2 teams a year 1 decent team on that so called scheduel then a bowl game while other teams fight through a conference scheduel that has more than 1 top 25 team you play that 1/2 assed highschool scheduel. Until ya change that I can't ever respect Boise State.... I hear ya commin to Blacksburg Va next year early lol that'll shut ya up quick like UGA did after that lone victory against OU. However it's not yur fault ya gotta clownlike conference

Boise St. would have a better chance of playing in the Super Bowl than EVER joining the Pac 10. They aren't on the same planet accademically, athletically or geographically. Scheduling Big 10, Pac 10, SEC opponents is a start. The Oregon game was a fluke, imo. Try another and we'll see.

@2 Beat the Sooners, Beat the Duck home and away. 1 point loss to the Horned Frogs ( Coaches #4 this year). No wonder BCS teams are ducking them. Kudos to V-Tech for a neutral in 2010.
@8 Join the cartel pretty much makes Doc's point.
@9 The coaches may not want to schedule Boise, but they've been fair about not knocking Boise for a weak schedule in their ballots. The computers can't do that, so the case for playoffs trumping conferences is getting stronger.
@11 If BSU joins the Mountain West for 2011 the 4 year formula might give the Big East's autobid to the Mountain West. ESPN/ABC has the Big East and WAC contracts so no wonder they're trying to find a big BCS game for BSU for 2011.
Doc's question is dead on. Will a third undefeated year and a third serious bowl opponent (Sooners+1, TCU -1) make any difference in scheduling? When the coaches #5 has to beg for a single big game for 2011, it's time to turn up the heat.
When I look at the coaches and media polls I think the non-AQ have a lot of earned media to run with. The last 4 positions should be reserved for any non BCS teams in the top 10. Can't reserve 6 spots for autobid and expect your conference losers to ever get in ahead of a top 10 non-AQ or independent.

The fact that Boise has to pay a PR firm to pressure the BCS is sad...because the BCS should already be paying rapt attention to them! The better Oregon (the PAC-10's new "king") looks, the more credit Boise should be getting for beating them earlier in the season. Thronedoggie was right, the BCS system is set up to be unfair: you can only play for the National Championship if you're from one of six conferences, unless you come from a "weak" conference (Big East) so in reality lots of things outside of your control have to happen in order for you to play in the NC. (unless you're in the SEC or Big 12)
Boise State really can't control what conference they're in (after all you can only join a new conference if the new conference wants to expand) and the whole concept or conference strength is silly. It's practically impossible to say that one conference is better than another.
    Earlier points:
    - Boise can't join the PAC-10 because they're content on being a 10-team conference. besides Boise's not a research university, like the conference's other schools
    - Joining the Mountain West wouldn't solve anything. Remember, they're a "mid-major" conference too, and besides if they hadn't produced Utah and BYU last year, most people would regard the conference on the same level as the WAC, with TCU playing the role of Boise.

post 14: when the defending national title holders decide to play more than 1 team this year let me know. it's okay for the sec but others get knocked for it. in my opinion, the best way to get people to stop selectivcely complaining about a teams SOS is for the teams that keep getting overlooked for real bowls to routinely publish what teams refused a home-and-home series with them. sources have said usc and ohio state would play them buy not in boise. for all the other complaints about them beating oregon in week 1 uga's only win against boise was also a week 1 game. you cant have it both ways.
as far as the tcu bowl last year. it was the most competitive bowl on tv. 1 team has to lose. they lost by 1 point. either of those teams could have competed against any of the top 10 teams last year.

will the bcs even exist next season in its current corrupt and dishonest configuration? no.
boise state and the others like boise state will not have to knock on the doors of the pac 10 or of any other conference.
nor does the mountain west have to get invloved in a time consuming anti trust litigation against the bcs and the power 6 conferences.
senator hatch does not have to wait for obama to hold hearings on the bcs.
civil rico lawsuits are much quicker and much more deadly . the bcs and the conferences and the ncaa, in thousands of individual dishonest acts of hubris at levels which have rarely been equalled in history, have already dug their own economic graves.
we are just taking the evidence provided by the bcs, the conferences, and the ncaa and present the evidence, which is in the form of admission of dishonest activities. to honest judges and juries all over the us.
we sure do thank the boise states, the utahs, the tcus, the byus, and senator hatch for helping to bring the evidence to the surface.
however, more than any other organization, we thank certain courageous sportswriters at yahoo sports, including dr. saturday and those who refused to back down on the reggie bush investigation(but not including usc shill dienhart, a recent pete carroll plant at yahoo sports). for providing us with more leads and information than any other media organization covering college frootball and college sports.

Hey Kendall, your an idiot------READ the article before you comment. BSU is coming to Washington DC to play VT in Redskins stadium. And I'll tell you, if Virginia Tech plays BSU like they are playing mighty ECU right now, the Broncos will SMOKE them. They played UGA in a season when UGA was a senior-stacked championship contender, and they were outmatched. VT isn't anything close to that team. Hang on to your asses, Virginia----the Broncos are comin to town!!

1st non big 6 vs big six 18 wins 85 LOSSES wondering why the big six and the bcs does not respect them. if you schedule no body during the year then you should play a nobody during the bowls boise state ooc games oregon ok thats one but, bowling green, cal-davis, and miami-ohio, thats three games they could have scheduled somebody good. if you schedule nobody then you should get no credit. football would be so much better if teams did not try thier best to schedule down just to make the won loss line look good and the teams that do so should not be rewarded with a prime bowl

@ 16: The fact is, Boise complains they get no love and the mediot author who wrote this article says Boise is relegated to the Poinsetta Bowl. So be it. What he failed to mention is that through all the boasting, through all the crying and whining, through all the we get no respect attitude, they go to the Poinsetta Bowl and LOSE? Are we supposed to sweep that under the rug like USC tries to do when they lose early in the season and then cry and whine at the end of the season, (Thank God they got beat again so we don't have to hear that crap anymore)! Seriously, if you want to be a contender, don't lose your bowl game, and especially don't lose the Poinsetta Bowl and then come crying the next year that you deserve a title shot. You made your own bed dude. Sleep in it. But hey, maybe you'll be lucky enough to win the Poinsetta Bowl this year, (doubtful). Because from the looks of things, that's where you're headed again. Make the most of it. Put on a big smile. Be glad. Chances look VERY good that TCU will whoop you again. So quite your whining. There's no crying in football, (unless you're a Boise fan). Oh, and before you beat your chest for beating OU, check their bowl record. The really sad thing is, you're just not as good as you think you are. And if you don't believe that, its simply because you don't want to. Sorry.

Big school politics put Boise state down. TCU cried and they was appointed ahead of the bronco's, That has beaten some darn good teams in the recent past I.E. Oregon this year, Oklahoma in the past. As far as schools like Boise state and Utah they get screwed by Big school politics because the dictators that run these polls are afraid that a smaller less funded schools can kick there butts
