If you can't land one former defensive coordinator who used a brief but successful stint at Texas to boost his head coaching stock, I guess it's only logical to go with another:

Auburn has hired Gene Chizik as its new football coach, according to people familiar with the university's search.

Chizik has called assistant coaches from other schools to compile his new coaching staff, said someone familiar with the situation.

Chizik has been Iowa State's head coach the last two seasons. He compiled a 5-19 record there.

There are other numbers here: Chizik spent three seasons as Auburn's defensive coordinator and put together the defense that led the nation in scoring defense during the Tigers' 13-0 season in 2004, then put together a top-10 defense on Texas' 13-0, mythical championship team in his first season in Austin.

But obviously, there's big number: 5-19. On his own, Chizik is 2-14 in Big 12 games, and Iowa State actually regressed in his second year, falling to 0-8 in the conference by an average of 20 points per defeat. Defensively, ISU finished this year in the bottom ten nationally -- 110th or worse -- in total, scoring and pass efficiency defense. The Cyclones' only wins were over Kent State and South Dakota State before a ten-game losing skid. Hey, at least they beat Kent State this year -- Chizik's first game in Ames was a nine-point loss to the Golden Flashes in 2007, quickly followed by defeat at the hands of Northern Iowa and Toledo before the end of September. There were flashes of competence here and there -- a close, competitive loss to Oklahoma in '07, a 20-0 halftime lead over Kansas before another eventual loss this year -- but 24 games in, the Cyclones have made no discernible progress from that ignominious start. Realistically, Chizik was probably another losing season away from being fired. At Iowa State.

Yeah, Auburn fans are going to be just thrilled about this hire. At last check, the Birmingham News' informal disapproval rating was in the neighborhood of 83 percent. Jay Jacobs isn't confirming anything yet -- apparently he's already being "heckled and booed very loudly" by a "raving lunatic fan" who met the AD's plane at the airport -- so maybe there's still time.

I was legitimately surprised Turner Gill wasn't even Syracuse's second choice. That he wasn't seriously considered here is less surprising in that light, but still a joke. Sheesh.

Turner Gill would have lit the south up and immediately made auburn a recruiting monster. Now these kids are not even interested. Auburn will be down for the next 10 years with this hire.

They saw Iowa State's 2008 uniforms (http://www.sundaymorningqb.com/story/2007/9/28/122520/741) and confused Gene Chizik with Pete Carroll.

Don't forget that not only did Iowa State go 0-8 by 20 points a loss in Big XII play, but they managed that impressive feat playing the weakest Big XII schedule. They didn't play Texas, Oklahoma or Texas Tech this year.
I think that makes their schedule roughly equivalent to a Big East slate. Or maybe Mountain West.

The sad thing is, Chizik is not a bad choice, just not the best. I can tell by the negativity from AU fans and ridicule of outsiders, that Chizik will not be given a fair chance to succeed. Unless AU hires the clone of Mike Leach or Paul Johnson as offensive coordinator, AU will struggle mightily to make a bowl next year and possibly in 2010 as well. AU is severely lacking in talent on offense, with the exception of running backs, so a quick turnaround is unlikely. Their defense does not have nearly the talent from past years either. Tubby and his crew got outrecruited the past 2 years and it is showing.
Most AU fans already don't like this hire and are depressed about it, but just think how bad things will be if AU goes 6-6 next year and 7-5 in 2010. I feel sorry for Chizik. Right now, it would have been better to get someone unproven than someone that has proven to go 5-19, even if ISU is an extremely tough place to win. I just hope that AU fans will try to be reasonable the next couple of seasons, but if Bammer continues its recent success, I doubt that will happen.

Seeing as how the Big 12 North seems to be coming down from its Daniel-Mangino-induced high, I wouldn't have ruled out Chizik getting a handle on things, leading ISU to respectability, then moving on to a job with a bit higher profile after four more years or so. But Auburn picking him up now is complete insanity. At first, I made the assumption that Jay Jacobs was unaware that Chizik ever left Texas, but then I remember that he must have been aware that Texas swooped in to claim Muschamp as a replacement. I mean, this makes no sense. None at all.
Oh and yes, since every post containing the word "Muschamp" must also contain the word "boom," here goes: boomboomboomboom

Gene will definitely have his hands full with trying to bring the Tigers back to prominence! I hope they give him the time (3-4) years to bring it around or else he's gone!

I thought Turner Gill would have been a GREAT choice for Auburn!! The man made Buffalo a winner, Buffalo, yessss! Gill will land a big job soon and in a few years Auburn will regret their decision of not hiring him. Stupid administrators at AU!!

I am not sure if I feel bad for Iowa State or AU. Iowa state will always be Iowa State, and AU will always find a way to make their football program look like a joke in big time football. I feel bad for the former players and possible recruits!

He isn't the right guy for the job..lol..They should have gotten a coach with a little more style to his coaching..TCU coach maybe..Tech's coach, Turner Gill, Maybe even a good assistant from USC, TEXAS, OU, FLORIDA,...At least the coach should have been a winner.. To be honest with you..If I was Auburn to would have went after houston nutt at ole miss...Nutt is a real good coach and has you see he doesn't need 3 or 4 years to make a decent team good..Arkansas and Ole Miss..And he's done very well at both schools..Texas fan.. 1999-2000..He beat us in the cotton bowl and we were favored..Then he came to Austin and beat us again with matt jones at qb..He is a real good coach and seems to know how to get to college athletes..

Nick Saban is not saying thank you to anybody for this gift. HE is now Dark Lord of the State of Alabama. He made this decision, and Jacobs and Gogue just followed his "advice" out of fear, lest he toss their souls in to the Hell found only in this black-soul stare.

As an AU alum, all I can say is that I'm thankful that my company's holiday party was last night. After I heard this news, the open bar really came in handy...
After this, there should not be a single sentient being left in the universe who believes that the people running the program at Auburn have any clue what they are doing.

I'm another person that's totally puzzled by what the heck the Auburn AD was thinking. The last couple of seasons, Auburn's troubles have been on offense, not defense. The offense has really just sucked over the last couple of seasons. So it's great that the guy's a defensive-minded coach, but that still doesn't solve the problems on OFFENSE. Chizik has a great defensive record at Auburn and Texas, but as Iowa State where he had control of the entire team, he failed miserably. What gives?
