Au revoir, Charlie Weis

UConn 33, Notre Dame 30 (Overtime). That's it. Don the hoods, light the fires, lead Charlie Weis down the long, spiral stairway to the dungeon beneath the Golden Dome and do what must be done. Might as well get on with it.

Athletic director Jack Swarbrick said this week there would be no decision on Weis' fate as Notre Dame head coach until after the Irish's season finale next week at Stanford, but it seems almost inhumane to leave a man bracing for the inevitable blow, as Weis will be if the situation remains "undecided" through the coming seven days.

Obviously, the thing is decided now, if it wasn't already: This loss means ND has dropped at least five games in three consecutive seasons for the first time in more than 20 years, and has no chance to finish in the final polls. The best-case postseason scenario, a consolation trip to the Gator Bowl, is out of the question, leaving another unsatisfying, third-tier bowl bid at best. Navy has two wins in South Bend in three years after a record 47-year drought in the series. Irish seniors went out in their final home game with a loss to an unranked, sub-.500 Big East also-ran, just as last year's seniors went out with a humiliating loss to Syracuse that initially unleashed the anti-Weis jackals. Weis has the worst winning percentage in Notre Dame Stadium of any Irish coach since 1975 -- "even worse than Gerry Faust," as the sympathetic NBC commentators noted immediately after the game, just before reluctantly agreeing on-air that Weis must be finished for falling woefully short of expectations with every conceivable advantage this year.

It's over; the only question is whether Swarbrick will wait until after the pointless finale to drop the ax, as promised, or go ahead and be done with it over the next two or three days.

When he was hired in December 2004, Weis assumed Tyrone Wilingham's chair with the swagger that would turn critics against him in short order when he composed his own epitaph: "You are what you are folks, and right now, you're a 6-5 football team. That's not good enough for you, and it's certainly not good enough for me." Weis had it all this year: An extremely experienced, talented team built entirely from his own highly-ranked recruiting classes, reared entirely in his program and staring down an usually favorable schedule that seemed to scream "10 wins." Instead, the Irish are a 6-5 football team for the second year in a row, headed for 6-6, and that's certainly not going to be good enough to keep Weis around into December. At the latest. It's been real, coach.

I am some what a football fan , but when it comes to Notre Dame it carries no weight to me. I still say in todays game it was Clausen s fault they lost it takes more than a coach to play the game it requires all players to do their jobs out there its only a FOOTBALL game for pete sake. Please people there will always be football no matter who plays the game...I figure the Education should come first esp at those amts of Money paid to Universities...Notre Dame will always be there...Play nice....

I want Weis to be promoted to AD, then maybe all their teams can suck. Anytime ND loses, all is right with the world!

No wonder Notre Dame doesn't want to join a conference...if they joined the Big East, they'd finish at the bottom every year and if they joined the Big Eleven, they'd battle Michigan State for fourth place in the East division every year.
It kills me to say anything nice about Storrs Correctional, but, awesome job, guys.

Weis should stick to a coordinator role. He's not a real leader-type of a guy.

Weis really isn't much of a coordinator type either. His departure from the Patriots didn't keep them from a Super Bowl. Weis benefited from Belichek's scheme, not his own talent.

I don't like ND but I have to feel sorry for old Charlie, even tho he makes the big bucks, failure can ruin a man and taint his soul. I hope his family is sheltered from the hell he's about to experience.

Poor Charlie, he looked like a beached whale during the 4rth quarter as the Refs took TD after TD away from
Storrs Correctional Institute on bogus holding calls. Even the Notre Dame cheerleader announcers had to note
these were bogus calls, as you sensed even they wanted to get the inevitable over with. These only prolonged the agony for Charlie the Whale, and then he had to suffer thru not only 1 overtime, but 2. Then they showed the infamous video of Charlie's first news conference after he got hired, Charlie looked a lot better than, he must have
gained 100 pounds since he took the job and aged 10 years. But you can't too feel bad for Charlie, ND will still
owe him like $8 Million dollars. That buys a lot of cheeseburgers and fries.

Since 1997, Notre Dame has a .538 winning percentage with 1 bowl win spanning 3 football coaches and a lot of "highly rated recruiting classes." That speaks for itself about Notre Dame's football program.

It is a great day in America. There is no school more arrogant than Notre Dame and its supporters. Any time they lose it is a great and mighty day for everyone else. Today they couldn't even beat a glorified high school team. Now they need to keep Weis as head coach and their should be a national movement to keep him and his losing ways in South Bend.

Saw the final score and glad i didn't waste time watching. At least ND will be rid of CW and can start looking for a real coach. While ND haters will rejoice, actually a sad day for college football. It is programs like ND that built the sport and when they sink to this level the whole sport loses. When Eastern State Teachers and Agricultural Technical College starts winning NCAA games who really cares? Not me and not you. Unless you happen to attend ESTATC.

Here is an idea: Mangino is in trouble at Kansas. So how about a straight swap: Mangino for Weis and visa-versa?
Mangino would be a lot of fun.

Yea charlie is finally going. it's about time, can't stand notre dame anyway. the 3 best coaches they had were knute rockne, ara, and lou holtz in my opinion. lou would have stayed but the university screwed that up. norte dame is very over rated. go navy.

The AD has already made up his mind, he said there are other mitigating factors such as graduation rates (higher), under CW than Davies and Willingham (really). I guess that 10 year extension has nothing to do with him staying. Every one finally realizes Bill Belichick, is and was the genius behind the Pats.

Sad to See ND still failing to post wins. Noteable that Weiss has led the nation with a 96% graduation rate, too bad the winning percentage is too low for him to stay on...

For all you ND bashers, check your schools graduation rate for athletes....you'll find that ND is at the top of all programs...and the football program is number #1 in graduation rate...athletes and coaches will come and go at Notre Dame, but your school will never live up to the Glory of Notre Dame!!! Notre Dame taught all your schools how to be Big Time in football!!! It is good to be envied!!
