Sounds like Frank Beamer's appeal to Hokie fans to "fill Dolphin Stadium with orange and maroon" for the New Year has fallen on somewhat, uh, deaf ears:

OK, now, I am not old. But I have been around long enough to feel some minor assault on my worldview when it becomes possible to get into the Orange Bowl game for less than it cost to park. What is this world coming to?

Ohio State fans aren't feeling the Fiesta Bowl, Texas fans have left 1,000 tickets on the table, even Alabama fans failed to snap up Utah's leftovers for the Sugar Bowl. All of those teams have one reason or another to feel some kind of malaise about where the team ended up -- Ohio State expected a mythical championship bid at the beginning of the year, and Alabama and Texas at the end; Utah fans would have overrun the Fiesta Bowl -- but what is this some kind of boycott? Or is the imploding economy just taking another bloated corporate giant down with it?

The ,market is saturated with too many bowl games, particulary with teams that ara undeserving and of no general interest. Moreover the matchups in most of the bowl,s are ridiculous. I'm a Bama fan but my interest in watching them play Utah is minimal. Its a lose-lose game for Bama, whether they win or lose and few if any in the South have any interest in Utah. The same wtih the Texas-Ohio State match up. Somehow, no matter how bad Ohio State may be, they wind up in a major bowl game against someone that is a much better team Finally, sending Notra Dame to play Hawiaa is a disgusting joke. Notre Dame is much like Ohio State, they get into Bowl games for absolutely no reason or ryhme. They suck. This is without doubt the worst bowl matchups of all time

It's just like trying to schedule games in the regular season. Boise State was willing to show as were their fans (i.e. the Fiesta bowl) while the Overhyped State isn't selling tickets.

People purchasing tickets to the NC game from the Orange Bowl directly had to purchase tickets to the NC and the Orange Bowl game as a pair. They were not able to purchase a single game ticket to the NC only. These were the people who did not quilify for their schools alloted tickets to the NC game only. Many of these Gator fans and I suspect OK fans are now selling their Orange Bowl tickets for next to nothing. Personally, I think Va Tech and Cincy will be a good, fun game to watch. If I lived in the area and was a College football fan I'd be at the game. I'll be at the FSU/Wisconsin game as it is. Being in Orlando I'm pretty sure it'll sell out to FSU fan. Get out and support your team, it'll be 8 months before you see them play again. BCS, Playoff, whatever happens, someone will always feel like they were screwed. If Texas wins their bowl how can you tell them they are not National Champs?

This isn't caused by the BCS. The matchup just isn't interesting enough to lure the normally well travelled Hokies fans to spend their money during an uncertain economy. Having a playoff system is going to have at least as many non-interesting match-ups.

Any playoff system would hurt the schools financially and this is the real reason we don't have one and won't have one in the near future. You only have to look no further than the division 11 schools to see what a playoff does for you. You can't even fill the stadium if one of the teams is local. I admit that the BCS has it's problems with match-ups (like this year) but it's better than the alternative.

to most sports writers that like to run off atthe mouth. The VT fans love their hokies and our happy to be playing ciny we are just burn out on going to fla. the acc championship has always been in fla. and now the champion always has to go back to fla. we the fans love to support our team, but not always in fla.

There are simply too many Bowl Games!!! I realize that it's about the all mighty dollar, but 6-6 teams shouldn't be rewarded as a "winning season". Geezzzzzz.......that's barely an AVERAGE Season. To be Bowl Qualified, teams should have a minimum of 7 wins.
ESPN/ABC/NCAA has promoted the BCS and bowl system and as I recall the media pundets were ecstatic when the BCS was first developed....but NOW, they are complaining for a Play-Off. The media will always cause controversy.
The NC would be a great game with any combination of Florida, Oklahoma, Texas, USC, Alabama, or Penn St. But, we truly do not know which of these 5 teams truly deserves to play for the NC.
I think an 8 team play-off, using only Confernce Champions and ONLY if they are ranked in the top 12. The ACC (Virginia Tech) would be disqualified by this and the Big East (Cincinatti) would barely get in, but the WAC (Boise St) and Mtn West (Utah) conferences would deservingly being included. In this scenario, 6 conference champions (FL, OK, USC, PSU, Utah, and BSU) would have higher seedings and there would be two "at large" teams (probably Texas and Alabama). I would much rather watch teams that have a realistic chance of winning......not teams that are god for TV ratings..........

When a successful franchise like the Detroit Red Wings can't sell out like they once did, even for the Winter Classic at Wrigley in a couple weeks, it's the economy. Yes, Michigan is as hard hit or more with the craziness going on in the pocketbook, and it is not just trickling downhill to our entertainment dollars, it's screaming downhill.
Unemployment at the highest levels in years, foreclosures and defaults everywhere, scaling back on everything....no wonder the travel industry and these bowl games in particular are hurting.

USC fans need to get over themselves. USC didn't just lose by a blocked extra point as Florida did. They were man-handled and embarrassed on National TV. As far as being in the title game- NO WAY! NODAY! If there was a one loss team with a beef I think Alabama has more to complain about. You go wire to wire undefeated in the regular season then lose 1

why, as a start, can't the 4 bcs bowls be used as the quarter-finals for the top 8 teams on or about new year's day. then the 4 winners could play the semi-final games about mid-january, with the winners of those 2 games playing for the national championship at the end of january. but i also like the idea of playing afternoon games and restricting the top 8 to power conferences and top-ranked teams.

Ute will wins and tide will still not respect them

Seriously?!?! You get the STARTING bid as the benchmark for what tickets could cost? Nothing else to write about, eh, Hinton?
i.e. I once started my motorcycle up for bids on ebay for 1 cent. (It ended up going for more than $2000.00), so according to this guy's logic, he'd be writing, "omg, u can buy a motorcycle for 1 cent!!!!!!11!!!!"

It is obvious that Mr Hinton is either (A) a simple UVA Wahoo fan that is envious that VT is going to a bowl for the 16th straight year (FYI - only Florida State and Florida have longer current bowl appearance streaks), or (B) hasn't taken the time before writing such typical media drivel to consider factors like:
    1) Airfare - running $1000+ from SW VA to Miami
    2) Decent seats for Orange Bowl going for $300+
    3) The economy
    4) The fan burnout that eventually happens after 15 years of going to bowl games (especially with a losing streak of 4)
    5) Fan burnout from going to the same bowl year after year (Miami was darn cold last New Years so there would probably be more willing to pay extra to go to Hawaii)
    6) Fan burnout from playing an opponent you just played last year and used to play every year (especially when many view them as overranked and thus you'll make no statement if you beat them)
    7) Some long time supporters unhappy with VT offensive coordinator - some vowing to no longer support until he is replaced
    8) The economy (again)
