Sounds like Frank Beamer's appeal to Hokie fans to "fill Dolphin Stadium with orange and maroon" for the New Year has fallen on somewhat, uh, deaf ears:

OK, now, I am not old. But I have been around long enough to feel some minor assault on my worldview when it becomes possible to get into the Orange Bowl game for less than it cost to park. What is this world coming to?
Ohio State fans aren't feeling the Fiesta Bowl, Texas fans have left 1,000 tickets on the table, even Alabama fans failed to snap up Utah's leftovers for the Sugar Bowl. All of those teams have one reason or another to feel some kind of malaise about where the team ended up -- Ohio State expected a mythical championship bid at the beginning of the year, and Alabama and Texas at the end; Utah fans would have overrun the Fiesta Bowl -- but what is this some kind of boycott? Or is the imploding economy just taking another bloated corporate giant down with it?

ESPN/ABC/NCAA has promoted the BCS and bowl system and as I recall the media pundets were ecstatic when the BCS was first developed....but NOW, they are complaining for a Play-Off. The media will always cause controversy.
The NC would be a great game with any combination of Florida, Oklahoma, Texas, USC, Alabama, or Penn St. But, we truly do not know which of these 5 teams truly deserves to play for the NC.
I think an 8 team play-off, using only Confernce Champions and ONLY if they are ranked in the top 12. The ACC (Virginia Tech) would be disqualified by this and the Big East (Cincinatti) would barely get in, but the WAC (Boise St) and Mtn West (Utah) conferences would deservingly being included. In this scenario, 6 conference champions (FL, OK, USC, PSU, Utah, and BSU) would have higher seedings and there would be two "at large" teams (probably Texas and Alabama). I would much rather watch teams that have a realistic chance of winning......not teams that are god for TV ratings..........

Unemployment at the highest levels in years, foreclosures and defaults everywhere, scaling back on everything....no wonder the travel industry and these bowl games in particular are hurting.

i.e. I once started my motorcycle up for bids on ebay for 1 cent. (It ended up going for more than $2000.00), so according to this guy's logic, he'd be writing, "omg, u can buy a motorcycle for 1 cent!!!!!!11!!!!"

1) Airfare - running $1000+ from SW VA to Miami
2) Decent seats for Orange Bowl going for $300+
3) The economy
4) The fan burnout that eventually happens after 15 years of going to bowl games (especially with a losing streak of 4)
5) Fan burnout from going to the same bowl year after year (Miami was darn cold last New Years so there would probably be more willing to pay extra to go to Hawaii)
6) Fan burnout from playing an opponent you just played last year and used to play every year (especially when many view them as overranked and thus you'll make no statement if you beat them)
7) Some long time supporters unhappy with VT offensive coordinator - some vowing to no longer support until he is replaced
8) The economy (again)
