Dust off your gun belts and bust out your pirate flags: Our weekly tailgating guide returns to Texas, this time stopping in Lubbock for Texas Tech's date with Oklahoma.

The Lowdown.
The thing that makes Lubbock special is that you have to really, really want to get there. It's nowhere near a major city; most Red Raider alums of our acquaintance make the five-hour drive from Dallas every game day, which has the effect of making the crowd that much more emotionally invested in the game.

Couple that with the relatively small size of Jones Stadium (around 59,000 capacity) and you get more of a personal feel to the victory vibes. It's a lot like a high school environment, and we mean that in the best way. Everyone you'll meet is fired up like it's their own kid playing out there. This feeling will only be magnified if you can manage to score a school ID and watch the game from the best seats in the house, the Double T on the grass. And make sure to snap a picture of the decrepit Double T scoreboard, as well, a source of ironic pride for many fans.

We assure all doubters, West Texas hospitality is not a myth. Lubbock has an exaggerated reputation for being unfriendly to visitors, but as with any school worth its tailgating cred, you've just got to behave and they'll open right up. Engage politely with a local and you'll find yourself stuffed to the gills with delicious barbecue before you know it. Added bonus: Lubbock's once-stringent blue laws have been relaxed, making beer available for purchase within the city limits.

What To Wear.
Parking will be harder to come by than in recent years thanks to new stadium construction, and it's a big campus, so be prepared to do some walking. T-shirts, jeans and boots are de rigeur, although girls are dressing up more than they used to. But whatever you throw on, pack some layers. Lubbock gets cold fast when the sun goes down, and high winds frequently kick up some dust, so bring sunglasses. And if you really want to blend in, doll up in your finest brigand wear and join the merry crew of Mike Leach's Pirate Academy.

Pregame Stops.
Chimy's, 2417 Broadway. Homestyle Mexican food and killer margaritas.
One Guy From Italy, 1101 University Avenue. Pizza joint heavily favored by students despite the terrifying jingle on the website.
Spanky's, 811 University Avenue. Our Red Raider brethren swear, "Nothing settles an upset stomach better than fried cheese logs."

Postgame Stops.
Lone Star Oyster Bar, 3040 34th Street and 5116 58th Street. Absolute dive that's not to be missed; try the Hot Shrimp.
Blue Light Live, 1806 Buddy Holly Avenue. Live music and wiggling coeds.
Cricket's, 2412 Broadway. Right across from campus with a nice beer selection.

What To Drink.
Our Texas Tech correspondent responds, in all caps, "KEYSTONE." Any manner of light beer will do, really, but if you're of a cocktail bent try a Raider Red, a sublime concoction of Big Red and vodka. Guns up!

Jag? Is that supposed to be an insult? I wasn't aware being a Jacksonville Jaguar fan was something to be ashamed of.

Good article. You painted a pretty accurate picture of Lubbock, but I have to say there are LOTS more places to go than listed. Nonetheless, great job. WRECK EM!!!

Those fans are completely like high schoolers. Actually, I believe their school of 'higher learning' is right up there with high schools. Who in their right mind would WANT to go to school in Lubbock. Did they ever get off probation, (for accreditation problems)???? There are SO many better places to visit than Lubbock. They remind me a lot of the Noisey Boises in that they whine and cry that they're always on the outside looking in. Another wannabe football program. If you do decide to go there, wear your head gear. They like to throw toritillas for some reason. Like I said, high schoolers.

When at Spanky's on university in Lubbock, one must attempt to eat the He-Man Woman Hater burger, a big-mac-ish concoction with three buns and two 1/2 pound beef patties, covered in chili and cheese. Out-standing. P.S. LongTrans is an idiot. Lubbock is a fantastic town.

This is by no means an exhaustive list, just favorite spots suggested by people we interviewed. More suggestions are always welcome -- leave as many as you want!

Seth is a good source, Holly. Well chosen. Bash's is still my favorite dive, though. Next door to One Guy's.

Lest I forget, one of THE great steakhouses in Texas is outside of Lubbock. The Mike-Leach-endorsed Cagle Steaks is west of town outside the loop on W 4th and FM 179. One of my all-time favorite places to get a steak!!!

LongTrans is either from Oklahoma or Austin. Good grief, get something constructive to say. I'm a Tech alum and my wife is working on her Phd there now. The school boasts one of the best law programs in the state and Tech engineers and architects are some of the best around. Friendly folks and a festive atmosphere make a comination that can't steer you wrong.

@ Hal B: Here's something constructive, "comination" has a "b" in it. B is the second letter in the alphabet. Maybe I was wrong. Maybe they aren't even at the high school level. I think your wife is wasting her money.

Poor Sooners and Poor Longhorns. Texas Tech has won three straight now in Lubbock over the Oklahoma Texans and Tech's win over the mighty Longhorns last year kept them out out the national title game. Tech's win over the Land Thieves in 2007 kept them out of the national title game (that they would have lost anyway).
Yesterday's 41-13 win over the Texans of Oklahoma was the worst loss they had ever experienced in the Big 12.
OU and TU is just hacked off because the Red Raiders can actually beat them. A typical Longhorn fan is a migrant worker who gets his ugly orange T-shirt at Dollar General and has never been to Austin. And doesn't even have a GED.
