How does one of the winningest major college coaches in history go from this:

... to this?

Answer: very slowly:

This is like one of those charts of a drug's effect on the brain over time -- high, then low, then not quite as high, then a little lower, then not quite as high, etc. Fulmer was very good at pulling out quasi-shocking seasons, even after the 1998 championship run -- the Vols' East Division titles in 2001, 2004 and 2007 were all surprises, and that's really the problem: while UT has continued to peak over the last ten years, those peaks haven't been as high, while the valleys have become more frequent and more depressing. Since '99, Tennessee's been favored to win the SEC East -- not the conference, just the division -- only once, in 2005, the year it collapsed and missed a bowl game (uh, the first year it collapsed and missed a bowl game). Year to year, it seems like there's not much consistency either way, but the overall trend since '98 is progressively, steadily down.

Why? Recruiting? Fulmer's classes followed essentially the same on-again/off-again pattern over the last six years, from highs in 2002 (best in the SEC by Rivals), 2004 (No. 4 in the SEC), 2005 (No. 1) and 2007 (No. 2) to lows in 2003 (No. 7), 2006 (also No. 7) and last year (No. 8). And the feted 2005 class, as minutely detailed last Friday by the Knoxville News-Sentinel, has been a bust compared to its advanced billing, leaving the ship in inordinately young hands.

That may or may not explain the near-total failure of the offense this year, which seems to hinge more than anything else on the problems at quarterback, which may or may not be tied to longtime guru David Cutcliffe's exit to Duke after successful stints at UT with Heath Shuler, Peyton Manning, Tee Martin and Erik Ainge. But overall, it seems like as good an explanation as any past, "They just lost it" -- when you're competing against the beasts assembled by Urban Meyer and Mark Richt in the division, and the Saban/Miles monster at LSU, with Tommy Tuberville and now Saban putting up giant border fences around Alabama, more than one subpar year in any three or four-year period can set the entire program back. And losing to UCLA ... that just makes no sense.

excellent analysis. also, I see that 2001 East Division title on the list and, as a gators fan, i cringe.

@socal 007: ok i'll bite. what usc has to do with this particular post i have no idea, but as far as the bcs - please, they are getting what they deserve, or rather what the pac 10 is giving them, which is nothing.
we all agree they good/great. no issue there. but unfortunately they have played no one (osu was overrated) and they play in a lousy conference and they have a loss. so why would any sane voter have them ahead of florida or oklahoma etc.? they wouldn't.
so it's just ignorance to cry about bias. super fan or not, a usc fan needs to be realistic. it's too bad the pac 10 is down, but that's life. get two more teams (perhaps from the wac, who won the pac 10 anyway), have a title game and join the fun. because that eventual win over notre dame that no one will care about just isn't cutting it.

Fulmer got what he deserved. We can only hope Auburn will follow suit. Tubberville and Fulmer and Willingham should start their own support group. I just hope none of these men become college ball "analysts" or "commentators."

Here's a question that I can't answer: Has any other coach been fired who had as high a win percentage as Fulmer ( .750)?

i believe donnan averaged 8-3 per year when we fired him at uga (and took a lot of crap about it, to boot). i'd say the moved worked out okay for us, but it's just a roll of the dice. as a dawg fan, i'd hate to see ut hire cutcliff.

Good news, everyone! Cutcliffe is staying put at Duke. Tennessee will have to find someone else.

Cutcliffe said he wasnt interseted... isn't that what Saban said about Bama? And the Vols fans who say Fulmer wasnt living up to expectations need to remember who set those high standards, that's right... Fulmer did.

The win percentage versus time graph for Fulmer is a telling illustration; but one should point out that if you plotted up one for Joe Paterno, it would have shown similar, disturbing-looking trends without the benefit of the last few seasons. He surely would have been shown the door a few years ago at Penn State if he wasn't a living legend. Now the decision to keep Paterno on is looking pretty good, isn't it? Who's to say with certainty that Fulmer couldn't have managed a similar upswing in the graph? We'll never know. Good luck to his successor with trying to satisfy the Tennessee fans!

I have always appreciated Coach Fulmer as a class act competitor in the SEC. I wish him the best and hope that he pursues another job in the conference. Auburn would also be crazy to get rid of Tuberville. These guys have contributed a great deal to the conference and to the players that they have coached.

Richard M, I'm not so sure that it was the rabid Vol fans who were not satisfied as it was that sniveling weasel of an athletic director at UT - Mike Hamilton. Mike has proven to be two-faced, saying, "I appreciate Phil Fulmer and all that he has accomplished here at UT..." while at the same time forcing his resignation. The administration at UT has alwo proven to be gutless in that they would not stand by Fulmer against their Athletic Dunce, Mike Hamilton. A part of Mike's problem is that he places the whole of UT's woes on the shoulders of Fulmer, when it was the players who layed down and quit against Florida, who chocked in the clutch in other games - and not Fulmer. In my opinion, according to Hamilton's logic, the current Vol football players shoule loose their scholarships and an immediate nationwide search be initiated for their replacements. However, the real solution is that Fulmer be retained, his contract completed (saving UT $6,000,000.00), and a nationwide search immediately be initiated to replace the Athletic Dunce with a quality Athletic Director.

I have been a UT fan for 25 years - Fulmer has done a great job at UT but it is time for him to go. I have never been one to jump on the bandwagon of immediately firing a coach (including Fulmer) during a bad stretch, but Fulmer will not be able to keep up with Meyer and Saban - they are just too good. It will take someone equally as talented to have a chance in the most difficult conference in football. Thanks Phil - let's move forward now.

    Ditto.
Tennessee football just stepped in the cold world of numbers, erasing the true meaning of collegiate sports. If I wanted that, I would have season tickets for pro football. Take a look at that bunch of babies.......that's where this is heading.
