Isaiah Thomas responded from being benched the game before to score 17 points, Quincy Pondexter added 17 and resurgent Washington cruised to a 79-56 victory over Arizona State on Saturday night. Washington coach Lorenzo Romar wasn't giving up on sophomore guard Isaiah Thomas when he benched him for the start of the second half against Arizona on Feb. 4.
Far from it. Romar simply wanted last season's Pac-10 Freshman of the Year to bring his game back to the level if belongs.
"He is really, really strong-willed and tough-minded," Romar said before the Huskies' matchup with Arizona State. "He's capable of bouncing back from situations like this. I think he'll be fine."
And he was.
Thomas had 17 points, seven rebounds, five assists and just one turnover, and sparked UW's 25-6 burst out of the starting gate in a 79-56 rout on Feb. 6. That avenged last month's 17-point loss to the Sun Devils in Tempe. Thomas shot 3-for-10 and scored seven points ...More |
