How weird have things gotten at Pauley Pavilion?
Ben Howland, that staunch disciple of man-to-man defense, unveiled a zone defense in the first half of the Bruins' 72-70 win over Arizona State in their Pac-10 opener.
"I thought hell froze over," guard Michael Roll said. "I mean, nobody in the world expected Coach Howland to play zone."
The truly bizarre moment came two days later, when the Bruins (7-7, 1-1) were having no success in their man defense against Arizona in an eventual 77-63 loss.
Did Howland consider trying the zone once more against the Wildcats?
He thought about it, then ruled it out.
