Tennessee's Smith to return for senior year (AP)

Tennessee forward Tyler Smith says he will withdraw his name from consideration for the NBA draft and return for his senior season with the Volunteers. Smith said at a news conference in Knoxville on Thursday that he reached the decision after talking with his family, coaches and teammates. He says he thinks the Vols have "a great chance to have something special" next year.

"Disappointing" is the word that pretty much sums up Tennessee's 2008-09 season.

The Volunteers came into the year as an overwhelming favorite to win the SECs overall championship and make a deep run in the NCAA Tournament. Instead, the Vols struggled to gain a tie in the Eastern Division and were one-and-done in the NCAA.

It was the first time the Vols had lost in the first round in coach Bruce Pearl's four seasons. They had advanced to the regional semifinals in each of the last two years.

The Vols had problems at both ends of the court.

On offense, they preferred an up-tempo pace and were at their best while freelancing in the open court. Against teams patient in the half-court game, such as a disciplined Gonzaga, the Vols struggled.
