Maybe Gabriel Harris is just what Stanford needed. But the freshman point guard, signed this spring, can't be expected to shore up all of the Cardinal's shortcomings.

The second year of coach Johnny Dawkins' reign figures to be a challenge, to put it nicely. Stanford finished ninth in the Pac-10 in 2008-09, and lost senior starters Anthony Goods, Lawrence Hill and Mitch Johnson.

It didn't help that junior-to-be Will Paul, a 6-10 forward with 3-point shooting range, failed to measure up academically and will be ineligible to play next season.

But the arrival of Harris, a 6-2 point guard from Birmingham, Ala., could have immediate impact.
