The season didn't start off badly for the Golden Eagles, who won four of their first five games. But things took a turn for the worse soon after a season-ending injury to forward Sai'Quon Stone in mid-December.

After a 9-3 non-conference campaign, things started to fall apart in the conference season for the Eagles, who started 4-2 but suddenly dropped five straight. Another win, then another five straight losses.

Part of the problem was the lack of depth for the Eagles, who weren't very deep, even when Stone was healthy. But taking a body off the bench, USM was forced to stay with its starters for long minutes with bad results. Too often, leads late in the fourth quarter turned into deficits, with the Eagles losing multiple games because they couldn't hold on late.
