Where the East was considered the Southland Conference's weaker division last season, the falloff began with Southeastern Louisiana.
The Lions, third in the division behind regular-season champion Stephen F. Austin and co-runner-up Nicholls State, finished the regular season five games back at 7-9.
That mark would have tied Southeastern with Texas State for fifth in the West. For a so-called third-place team, clearly Southeastern didn't keep pace with the lead horses.
Unusual circumstances saw Southeastern lose its top scorer, Kevyn Green, who averaged 19.2 points per game at mid-season.
