With four starters and a key reserve back from last season's team, perhaps San Jose State can have the breakthrough many expected for them in 2008-09.

That didn't happen, and the Spartans, if they wanted, could at least point at injuries as an excuse. They finished 13-19, which was less than they wanted, but it was still the team's best record in four seasons under coach George Nessman.

The Spartans lose three seniors—starting forward Tim Pierce, wing DeVonte Thomas and guard DaShawn Wright—but return five of their top six scorers, including junior guard Adrian Oliver. He averaged 17.1 points but played in only 18 games after becoming eligible for the second semester.

What the Spartans need from him now is a full season of health.
