Few teams can say they ended their previous season on a five-game winning streak. It's just that Penn State's successful run to finish the 2008-9 campaign came in the second-tier postseason tournament. Still, hopes are high in Happy Valley after Penn State won the NIT title, the school's first-ever basketball championship in a national tournament.

If you looked at the 2008-09 Big Ten standings, Penn State was no worse than the sixth-best team in the league. The Nittany Lions shared fourth place with Ohio State and Wisconsin, then claimed their highest seed (No. 6) in the 12-year history of the Big Ten tournament.

But if you looked at the 65-team NCAA Tournament field on Selection Sunday, Ohio State and Wisconsin had their names on the magical VIP list. So did seventh-place Michigan and eighth-place Minnesota. But Penn State found itself on the outside for the 41st time in the last 44 years.

Going by the numbers, the snub made sense. The Nittany Lions entered the Big Ten tournament with an RPI of 63 due to a less-than-challenging non-conference schedule.
