Deon Thompson had 23 points and eight rebounds to help No. 6 North Carolina beat Belmont Abbey 107-59 on Friday night in its only exhibition game. Tyler Zeller scored 17 points for the defending national champions, while Ed Davis added 13 points, six rebounds and four blocks. The Tar Heels shot 57 percent and took a 56-36 advantage on the boards against the undersized instate Division II program.

The last time North Carolina faced such a rebuilding job, the Tar Heels made it back into the NCAA field in their first year, played in a regional championship game in their second, made it to the Final Four in their third year, and won the national title in their fourth.

The Tar Heels, who must replace four starters from the 2009 NCAA championship team, are hoping to step up the pace of that rebuilding project this time around.

In fact, it wouldn't be all that far-fetched to see the Heels in the Final Four again next April in Indianapolis.

Look at it this way:

Forward Ed Davis has more experience than Tyler Hansbrough did when he had to step in as a freshman.

North Carolina lost a lot of talent from the team that won last season's national championship, from a four-year star who was the program's all-time leading scorer and rebounder to a couple of underclassmen-turned-NBA rookies. Then again, that might just mean more playing time for John Henson.

Larry Drew II never had to show off much of a jumpshot or take ownership of North Carolina's high-powered offense as a freshman playing behind future pro Ty Lawson. Those pressure-free days are over. Now Lawson is in the NBA and the unproven Drew looks likely to inherit the starting point guard job for the defending national champion Tar Heels.
