David Carter's first few months on the job wouldn't be considered boring.

He put in his time at Nevada—five years as an assistant to Trent Johnson and then five years under Mark Fox, who left to take over at Georgia—but it was still hard to be prepared for the beginning of his tenure as head coach.

He soon had to deal with unhappy freshman recruits—guard Mark McLaughlin asked out of his letter-of-intent and eventually landed at Baylor. Center Steven Bjornstad also asked out—a request that initially was denied—but he was released in mid-June because of a paperwork issue. Both were considered to be likely contributors next season.
