In just two seasons, Tubby Smith took Minnesota basketball off the scrap heap, shined it up and returned it to prominence with an appearance in the NCAA Tournament.

Such a dramatic turnaround for a program still haunted by scandals and NCAA violations seemed impossible at the start of the season.

Then again, the Gophers' brilliant 16-1 start means their 22-12 season—and subsequent first-round loss from the tournament—leaves a bitter taste of disappointment.

There is little question, that Minnesota basketball is on the right track with Smith in charge. The question is: How much longer will he be in the Twin Cities?
