Damian Johnson had 16 points, 10 rebounds and seven steals to lead No. 25 Minnesota to a 114-47 win over Minnesota Duluth in an exhibition game Thursday night. Lawrence Westbrook, the other senior in Minnesota's starting lineup, scored 19 points. With suspended newcomers Trevor Mbakwe and Royce White watching in shirts and ties, the Gophers missed some muscle inside but that didn't matter.

Another Minnesota basketball recruit is in trouble: Freshman forward Royce White faces misdemeanor charges of theft and fifth-degree assault for allegedly shoplifting and shoving a security guard at the Mall of America. Coach Tubby Smith announced indefinite suspensions Tuesday for White and senior guard Devron Bostick for violations of team rules he wouldn't identify.

Junior forward Trevor Mbakwe, one of Minnesota's touted new recruits, will not be allowed to play for the 25th-ranked Gophers until his pending court case on a felony aggravated battery charge is cleared up. Athletics director Joel Maturi announced Monday his decision on Mbakwe, who faces a December trial for an alleged attack on a woman in Miami in April.

Decker out for season with foot injury (AP)

Minnesota star wide receiver Eric Decker will miss the rest of the regular season because of a foot injury. Gophers coach Tim Brewster said Tuesday that Decker may need surgery to fix the arch he sprained in last week's game at Ohio State. If he doesn't need surgery, he might be able to play in a bowl game.

Not so long ago, The Barn was a mausoleum. The Gophers couldn't win games and couldn't lure their hard-core fan base inside Williams Arena.

Now, as Tubby Smith enters his third season at Minnesota, The Barn is the most exciting place in the Twin Cities (non-Adrian Peterson division).

The Gophers start the year at the program's highest point since the Clem Haskins era was not yet between the NCAA's crosshairs. Minnesota welcomes back its top nine scorers from last season's 22-win team that earned the school's first NCAA bid since 2005. Then Tubby added four premier recruits, at least three of whom should jump into the Gophers' rotation right away.
