Spartans hold annual Madness (AP)

The race to Indianapolis is on, and Michigan State coach Tom Izzo sped onto the Breslin Center court in a Spartan-green Indy car, then donned a winner's wreath and took a swig of champion's milk. His goal for 2009-10 is simple -- to take Michigan State back to Indy next April for the Final Four and enjoy a different kind of celebration.

What does Michigan State do for an encore? Especially considering that last year's run to the NCAA Tournament title game has only increased expectations for this year?

"The Final Four appearances have been great," said coach Tom Izzo, who has led MSU to that magical mark five times in the last 11 years. "But sometimes they are an anchor because I think ... probably most of our fans feel that the Final Four is on our schedule and it's not."

But it's fair to say that a working appearance at Indianapolis in the first week of April certainly is a realistic option. Michigan State's two national championship trophies are on display in a glass case near coach Tom Izzo's office. Between the crystal hardware, words on an empty pedestal spell out Izzo's mission: "Reserved for future championship." The Spartans lead the nation with five Final Four appearances since 1999.
