The Big Ten standings look a lot different than a week ago. Purdue's surge and Michigan State's slump has a lot to do with it. Michigan State isn't sure yet how long LWK (Life Without Kalin) will last, but this may be an opportunity for the team to grow in other areas—similar to the way the 2000 MSU national title team found benefits in the two-month absence of Mateen Cleaves because of a foot injury.
That's not to say the Spartans don't want Lucas back, and soon. Michigan State is preparing for a huge game in the Big Ten championship race, Tuesday at home against Purdue.
But in Saturday's 78-73 loss at Illinois, the Spartans got contributions from some seldom-used players and showed some grit in coming back from several deficits.
