D.J. Stephens shows off his leaping ability with volleyball-style blocked shot (The Dagger: College Basketball Blog)

If professional basketball doesn't work out for D.J. Stephens, the high-flying Memphis guard might want to give beach volleyball a try.
Displaying the sort of hang time and form Karch Kiraly would love, Stephens soared high in the air and spiked the ball right out of Adreian Payne's hands Saturday as the Michigan State forward went up for a shot near the rim. The block helped sixth-seeded Memphis trim a 13-point first-half deficit to three by halftime in its round of 32 matchup with the third-seeded Spartans, but Michigan State pulled away late for a 70-48 victory.
Payne should have known he needed to go up stronger against Stephens considering the 6-foot-5 Memphis guard's reputation as a leaper.
Stephens is one of the nation's most accomplished dunkers and won Conference USA's defensive player of the year award in part because of his timing and instinct as a weakside shot blocker. His vertical leap is impressive enough that he takes all jump balls for the Tigers and he was photographed earlier this month actually kissing the rim.
It's Payne and not Stephens, however, who had the last laugh.
Stephens missed six of his seven shots and finished with just three points in his final college game, though he has blocked three shots and played his usual sound defense. Payne keyed Michigan State's second-half surge that helped the Spartans transform a tight game into a rout, finishing with 14 points and 10 rebounds.

Take a moment to admire Josh Pastner’s defensive prowess and passion (The Dagger: College Basketball Blog)

Memphis coach Josh Pastner isn't known as one of the most exuberant college basketball coaches, but don't think for a second the guy doesn't have passion.
Late in the first half of Memphis' Round of 32 game against Michigan State, Pastner saw the Spartans pass the ball into the post and noticed junior forward Tarik Black didn't have his hands up to defend Derrick Nix.
Pastner couldn't stand for that. So he starting jumping up and down like a mad man presumably telling Black what he was doing wrong. Black was able to force Nix into an awkward looking left-handed shot that missed and the Tigers won the rebound.
Pastner earned his first NCAA tournament victory Thursday when the Tigers beat Saint Mary's and clearly wants another to take his team to the Sweet 16.

Be honest, when Memphis inexplicably allowed Matthew Dellavedova to get the ball in his hands in the final seconds today, you thought the senior point guard had at least one more dagger in him.
Dellavedova's desperate 3-point attempt from right in front of the Saint Mary's bench went wildly long instead and Memphis survived 54-52 , robbing the Gaels of a chance to wear the glass slipper in this year's tournament.
[Related: DJ Stephens of Memphis becomes NCAA tourney's first star with dunks ]
It would have been the first magic moment of the tournament, not just because it would have been a No. 11 seed beating a No. 6, but because the Gaels trailed by five points with fewer than 20 seconds remaining.

Every tournament brings a few breakout stars from the first weekend, and Memphis' DJ Stephens made his stamp on this year's tourney in the most effective way possible: by throwing down dunks hard enough to rock the Palace of Auburn Hills. His slams were the exclamation point on a harder-than-it-had-to-be 54-52 win over St. Mary's, the first time Memphis has gotten out of the first round in the last three tournaments.
It may have been much of the nation's first (and, as he's a senior, last) introduction to Stephens, but it was perfectly in keeping with the dunking mastery he's shown during his entire Tiger career. He's one of the first post-Calipari Tigers, rescued by Memphis coach Josh Pastner when other schools bailed on their scholarship commitments to Stephens. Asthmatic, skinny and unable to do more than two pushups as a freshman, as revealed in a fine local profile of him , Stephens turned into one of the most beloved ballers in a town that sanctifies its basketball heroes, like Penny Hardaway, Elliott Perry and the late Lorenzen Wright. Stephens fits perfectly into Pastner's theory of vertical basketball.
"I don't like playing below the rim," Pastner said at halftime. "If you're going to play for me, you've got to be quick, you've got to be fast, and you've got to play above the rim."
That's not a problem for No. 30. Stephens has a habit of circus routines around the basket; check out this video from last week's Conference USA tourney. Yes, that's Stephens kissing the rim:

Memphis now prepares for a tough matchup with Michigan State on Saturday.

Where to Watch March Madness 2013 on TV and online: Your complete Day 1 reference guide (The Dagger: College Basketball Blog)

It's March Madness time, and that means it's time to begin scheming how to keep an eye on your bracket while working (during the day) or navigating your hundreds of channels (during the evening and weekend). Relax, we've got you covered. Here's the complete rundown of where to see the tournament.
Online: All games streaming on Yahoo! Sports right here , and also available here .
Television: Break out your channel guide, because this will be different for different cable/dish systems. All times Eastern.

First Games
12:15 (Midwest): #3 Michigan State vs. #14 Valparaiso.
TV: CBS; Announcers: Verne Lundquist, Bill Raftery, Rachel Nichols
12:40 (East): #6 Butler vs. #11 Bucknell.
TV: truTV; Announcers: Ian Eagle, Jim Spanarkel, Allie LaForce
1:40 (West): #8 Pitt vs. #9 Wichita State.
TV: TBS; Announcers: Spero Dedes, Doug Gottlieb, Jamie Maggio
2:10 (Midwest): #4 Saint Louis vs. #13 New Mexico State.
TV: TNT, Announcers: Brian Anderson, Dan Bonner, Marty Snider.
This will be the tournament's first look at Saint Louis, a fashionable dark horse candidate this season. Michigan State will similarly get its own title hunt started with what should be an easy win. Butler is a potential upset candidate, but then pretty much everyone south of #2 is in the opening round.
Second Games (times approximate)
2:45 (Midwest): #6 Memphis vs. #11 Saint Mary’s.
TV: CBS; Announcers: Verne Lundquist, Bill Raftery, Rachel Nichols
3:10 (East): #3 Marquette vs. #14 Davidson.
TV: truTV; Announcers: Ian Eagle, Jim Spanarkel, Allie LaForce
4:10 (West): #1 Gonzaga vs. #16 Southern
TV: TBS; Announcers: Spero Dedes, Doug Gottlieb, Jamie Maggio
4:40 (Midwest): #5 Oklahoma State vs. #12 Oregon
TV: TNT, Announcers: Brian Anderson, Dan Bonner, Marty Snider.
Memphis hasn't gotten out of the first round the last two years, so the pressure will be on the Tigers to get the job done early. Oregon is a surprising #12 seed and perhaps the likeliest bet for a Thursday upset. Gonzaga has the talent to be #1 but is still seeking validation; the sooner it can win the weekend, the better. Marquette has a long way to go to reach Atlanta, but the regular-season Big East co-champs are in prime dark horse position.
Third Games
6:50 (Midwest): #1 Louisville vs. #16 North Carolina A&T.
TV: TBS; Announcers: Ian Eagle, Jim Spanarkel, Allie LaForce
7:15 (South): #4 Michigan vs. #13 South Dakota State.
TV: CBS; Announcers: Verne Lundquist, Bill Raftery, Rachel Nichols
7:20 (West): #6 Arizona vs. #11 Belmont.
TV: TNT; Announcers: Spero Dedes, Doug Gottlieb, Jamie Maggio
7:27 (East): #5 UNLV vs. #12 California.
TV: truTV, Announcers: Brian Anderson, Dan Bonner, Marty Snider.
Louisville begins its charge for a title right here; expect an efficient dispatching of the play-in A&T. The Arizona-Belmont matchup carries a lot more intrigue than it did just a few weeks ago; Belmont might well take home a big-name trophy here. Michigan likewise needs to be alert to an early-tourney letdown against South Dakota State. Seriously.
Fourth Games (times approximate)
9:20 (Midwest): #8 Colorado State vs. #9 Missouri.
TV: TBS; Announcers: Ian Eagle, Jim Spanarkel, Allie LaForce
9:45 (South): #5 VCU vs. #12 Akron.
TV: CBS; Announcers: Verne Lundquist, Bill Raftery, Rachel Nichols
9:50 (West): #3 New Mexico vs. #14 Harvard.
TV: TNT; Announcers: Spero Dedes, Doug Gottlieb, Jamie Maggio
9:57 (East): #4 Syracuse vs. #13 Montana.
TV: truTV, Announcers: Brian Anderson, Dan Bonner, Marty Snider.
Keep an eye on New Mexico, which could be starting a strong sleeper run right here. If you can call a #9 seed an upset pick, this would be the place for it with Missouri. Syracuse could storm right past Montana without slowing down, or could be done before Friday arrives. VCU has the potential to carve a nasty path through the South.
