   After leading Kent State to its first non 20-win season since 1997-98, the school's administrators didn't fire coach Geno Ford. Instead, they sent him and his team to Italy. The Golden Flashes played four exhibition games during their 10-day trip in late August.

While the games were fun and the sight-seeing remarkable—Kent State visited Rome, Venice and Vatican City among other hot spots—the chance to get 10 bonus practices before the trip gave the Flashes a head start going into the fall's official practices. The team's three junior-college transfers and its lone freshman couldn't take part in those practices or go to Italy, but now is their time to catch up to the team's nine scholarship returnees.
