Ranking the 10 best games of this year’s college basketball season (The Dagger: College Basketball Blog)

The Dagger continues its season-in-review series this week with a look back at the best games of the 2012-13 college basketball season. Let us know which ones we missed via Twitter or in the comments below.
1. Louisville captures national title

Why it was memorable: Very few national championship games turn out to be must-see, but this one was scintillating from start to finish. Little-known freshman Spike Albrecht came off the bench to torch Louisville for 17 first-half points. Fellow reserve Luke Hancock brought the Cardinals back from a 12-point deficit with four 3-pointers in a two-minute stretch. And despite Trey Burke's heroics to keep Michigan competitive in the second half, the trio of Peyton Siva, Gorgui Dieng and Chane Behanan each made enough big plays to help Louisville pull away for an 82-76 victory.
2. Notre Dame outlasts Louisville in 5OTs
Why it was memorable: A mundane Big East battle that appeared destined to be forgotten suddenly became captivating when Notre Dame's Jerian Grant scored 12 points in 31 seconds to rally the Irish from an eight-point deficit with less than a minute to go. One overtime turned to two, two turned to three ... and pretty soon the two teams were playing deep into the night. Nine players fouled out in Notre Dame's 104-101 five-overtime victory, and the hero of the game didn't play a minute in regulation. Garrick Sherman entered the game in the first overtime and hardly left the court thereafter, scoring 17 points and grabbing six rebounds.
3. The birth of Dunk City
Why it was memorable: The reason Florida Gulf Coast's upset of Georgetown is so high on this list isn't because the Eagles became only the seventh No. 15 seed ever to topple a No. 2 seed. It was the way they did it that resonated. Bombing threes, throwing lobs and attacking in transition at every opportunity, FGCU extended a two-point halftime lead to as many as 19 points and never let the Hoyas any closer than four points down the stretch. The Eagles rode the momentum from their first upset to a victory over San Diego State in the next round, becoming the first No. 15 seed ever to reach a Sweet 16.

Syracuse smothers Big East rival Marquette to reach fifth Final Four (The Dagger: College Basketball Blog)

One of the key questions so far in the NCAA tournament has been whether any team can outscore No. 1 overall seed Louisville. It's time to consider if anyone will solve the Syracuse zone.
The Orange frustrated fellow Big East member Marquette, a team that is accustomed to Jim Boeheim's famous defense, throughout their Elite Eight battle today. The Golden Eagles never looked comfortable on the offensive end and it was reflected on the scoreboard throughout Syracuse's 55-39 victory.
In a season in which Boeheim won his 900th game, the Orange are returning to the Final Four as East Region champions. They were a No. 4 seed and didn't get any breaks along the way, beating No. 1 seed Indiana and No. 3 seed Marquette to earn their first trip to the national semifinals since winning it all in 2003 with Carmelo Anthony and Co.

President Barack Obama attended an NCAA tournament game he didn't expect to happen today.
When Obama filled out his bracket two weeks ago, he had No. 1 seed Indiana meeting No. 2 seed Miami in the East Regional Final with a trip to the Final Four on the line. No. 3 seed Marquette and No. 4 seed Syracuse had other plans.
Obama was probably wishing his bracket had held up early in the first half of the Elite Eight matchup when television cameras revealed his presence at the game to those watching around the nation and those in the arena. It was an ugly first half of basketball with both teams struggling to make shots taking a defensive-minded approach. Nothing new for two Big East rivals.
The teams began to loosen up later in the half and the Golden Eagles started to figure out how to score against the 2-3 zone, but Syracuse still led 24-18 at halftime.

FORT MYERS BEACH, Fla. — Other than Cowboys Stadium where the game itself was played, the best place to watch Florida Gulf Coast in the Sweet 16, obviously, was at the beach. Or right next to it, at a place called Times Square, a part of town that gives off a port city vibe. The resulting event might not have been an outing worthy of those classic Jackie Treehorn beach parties, but the setting was close enough.
The nearby town of Cape Coral donated a big-screen projection TV and local businesses — which included a pizzeria, a Greek restaurant and a Dairy Queen — were good neighbors and let the party spill from the square into their respective spaces. That's what this run for FGCU's men's basketball team was all about, anyway — bringing the community together like it rarely has been before .
If only FGCU had won . Darn those Florida Gators.
There were cops on foot hanging around and cops on Segways rolling around just in case the party got out of hand, with officers protecting those who draw water in town from those who don't. It was funny to see, considering the crowd wasn't only comprised of young people, but also seniors who were there to root on their local team. Thankfully, nothing transpired that required a harsh reaction from law enforcement. The crowd did erput with joy when the underdog Eagles opened the game with a lead that included a patented high-flying slam — a donation from "Dunk City."
Certainly there would be more. And, for about half of a half, the Eagles looked like they were going to soar into the Elite Eight.

Welcome to Dunk City, population everybody zero.
Florida Gulf Coast University's Cinderella run ended the way most bad dates do: with anger, frustration, self-loathing and and a vow to never speak of this night again.
Wow, was this an ugly game. Like, "delete from your DVR and smash your DVR" ugly. FGCU's in-state rival Florida "won" this 62-50, and by won we mean "finally remembered who was the 3 seed and who was the 15 seed." This is the kind of game film that coaches regard the same way the rest of us regard our high school yearbook photos: as a vow that their players should never, ever, ever look that wretched again.
Riding a national wave of goodwill, Florida Gulf Coast University jumped out to a 15-4 lead, throwing down a couple trademark alley-oops along the way, and surely some Eagles fans began thinking that maybe, just maybe there was a chance they'd surprise the Gators. Happened twice already, right?
But it wasn't to be. Florida remembered that it was, well, Florida, and used a combination of suffocating defensive pressure inside and smarter shot selection outside to unfurl a 23-2 run. And while Florida had trouble putting away FGCU — the Eagles were within seven with under three minutes remaining — the outcome was never really in doubt once Florida found its feet. The Gators simply ground Cinderella's glass slippers into shards.
FGCU had as many turnovers (20) as it had made field goals (yep, also 20). That's lesson #1 in how to give away a game. Florida shot an even worse percentage from the field, 39 percent to 46 percent, but wore the Eagles down with an offensive philosophy best characterized as "throw enough crap at the basket and some of it's going to go in."
The key play came with two minutes left in the game. Florida's Mike Rosario, inbounding the ball from the halfcourt sideline, bounced the ball off the back of FGCU's Christophe Varidel, then took the ball straight to the rack. That was the basketball equivalent of planting a blue-and-orange flag in the smoking ruins of Dunk City.
Still, let's not let our final images of FGCU overshadow the magnitude of what they accomplished. The first 15th seed to reach the Sweet Sixteen, the team put their school on the map — that's almost literally true; most of America hadn't even heard of FGCU a week ago — and reminded us of why the NCAA tournament is so much fun.
Florida moves on to face Michigan on Sunday with a berth in the Final Four on the line. FGCU, meanwhile, heads back to Fort Myers. It wasn't a pretty ending, but then 66 other endings in the NCAA tournament aren't any prettier.

FORT MYERS, Fla. — Sophomore Adam Linn lives smack dab in the middle of "Dunk City," and even he didn't pick his own school when filling out brackets for the NCAA men's basketball tournament.
"I wanted us to win but I didn’t think we were going to beat Georgetown at all," Lind said of Florida Gulf Coast's first opponent. The Eagles since have done even better than beating Georgetown, becoming the first 15-seed ever to reach the Sweet 16.
And what about the game Friday night, against intrastate giant Florida?
"Oh, we’re going to win," said Lind, a criminal justice major. "We’re not scared of no Florida Gator."
It's remarkable what a couple of surprising victories have done for the collective confidence of the smallest state school in Florida, one which didn't even start offering classes until 1997. You have to do a little searching to find FGCU fever, though.

Ladies and gentlemen, it's Dunk City time. Florida Gulf Coast University's improbable run through the NCAA tournament has inspired legions of fans — hey, who knew FGCU had students, much less fans? — to show their allegiance to their newly prominent alma mater in ever-stranger ways. As we count down the hours to FGCU's Friday night tipoff against in-state rival Florida, let's take a quick look at some of the finest, wildest and weirdest denizens of Dunk City.
First, let's establish just what we're talking about here when we talk Dunk City. To refresh your memory:
Clear? Good. Now, let's continue.

Welcome to Dunk City

Don't explain this t-shirt to your mom
Ah, the t-shirts have begun hitting. This is a particularly good one, but you'll pardon us if we don't translate it here. We like our jobs. (Along those same lines: FGCU isn't quite ready for its ESPN close-up, as this NSFW chant broadcast live on SportsCenter demonstrates .)

In the end, though, this t-shirt sums it up. Yep, we know. And if FGCU is able to take out Florida on Friday night, we're all packing up and moving to Dunk City.

Reseeding the Sweet 16 from most likely to least likely to win a championship (The Dagger: College Basketball Blog)

The opening weekend of the NCAA tournament produced plenty of surprises, but it did not change the favorite to capture the national title. That remains No. 1 overall seed Louisville, which looked as dominant as anyone advancing to the Sweet 16.
With the regional semifinals set to tip off Thursday evening, here's ranking of the 16 teams still alive from most likely to least likely to win a championship. To be clear, this is not merely a best-to-worst list – it also takes into account upcoming draw and where those games will be held.
[ Bracket busted? Try again with Second Chance Tourney Pick'em! ]
1. Louisville
How they got here: Defeated North Carolina A&T and Colorado State
Up next: No. 12 Oregon
Outlook: Since a five-overtime loss to Notre Dame during Big East play, Louisville has reeled off 12 wins in a row, captured the Big East tournament title and throttled its first two NCAA tournament opponents by an average of nearly 30 points. The team that beats the Cardinals will have to be patient, careful with the ball and torrid from the field, which is bad news for an Oregon team that plays at a fast pace and turns the ball over a little too frequently.
2. Indiana
How they got here: Defeated James Madison and Temple
Up next: No. 4 Syracuse
Outlook: It took a key block, a shrewd coaching decision and a game-clinching 3-pointer for Indiana to survive Temple's round of 32 upset bid, but the Hoosiers did what they needed to do, which was survive and advance. They have the firepower to solve Syracuse's zone and to overcome Miami or Marquette in the regional finals, but more production from everyone besides Victor Oladipo and Cody Zeller is essential.
[Related: Top seeds L'ville, Kansas in the way of All-Big Ten Final Four ]
3. Florida
How they got here: Defeated Northwestern State and Minnesota
Up next: No. 15 Florida Gulf Coast
Outlook: Dominant as Florida has been in its first two games, questions remain how the Gators will fare down the stretch in a close game and whether they can hold onto a late lead in an Elite Eight game the way they've failed to do the past two years. Florida may have the size, length and athleticism to put Florida Gulf Coast away early, but whether it's the Elite Eight or the Final Four, the Gators eventually will be tested in a close game.

As Florida Gulf Coast players danced around the court Sunday night celebrating becoming the first No. 15 seed ever to reach the Sweet 16 , San Diego State star Jamaal Franklin made a point to seek out the Eagles' best player.
Franklin pulled FGCU senior Sherwood Brown aside, embraced him and delivered a classy but heartfelt message.
"He just told us that we did a great job and he was just saying to keep this thing going," Brown said. "We're doing something special, and he just wants us to keep it moving. Don't stop now."
Franklin's version of the conversation was similar. He said he encouraged Brown to keep being a leader, to embrace the opportunity of playing in the Sweet 16 and to make FGCU's ride last as long as possible.
"Those guys we played against right now are just like us," Franklin said . "They all love each other and they all play together. They just want to win. And you can see at the end of the game, a lot of teams win games and just leave the court, but they embraced it. They embraced it together."
