So much for patience in rebuilding. Coach Tom Green was fired in June, more than three months after the season ended, and brings a surprising end to his 26 seasons at the school.

"For 26 years I was the coach of this team and an ambassador for this university," Green said in the New York Post.

It was a delayed, albeit rather fitting way for another tough season to end.

Fairleigh Dickinson went to Loretto, Pa., for the final game of the regular season technically alive in the race for one of the eight spots in the conference tournament. The Knights needed a win over last-place Saint Francis and a Wagner loss to Monmouth to make the playoffs.

Neither happened.

So, the Knights are out for the second straight season.

On Feb.

Less than a week after firing longtime coach Tom Green, Fairleigh Dickinson has hired assistant Greg Vetrone as interim coach through next season. The hiring was announced Tuesday by athletic director David Langford, who acknowledged last week that the late timing of Green's dismissal might prompt the school to choose an interim coach.

Tom Green has been fired as the basketball coach at Fairleigh Dickinson after leading the Knights to 407 wins and four NCAA tournament appearances in a 26-year tenure. He guided the Knights to 17 winning seasons, but they won just 15 games over the past two seasons and had three straight losing seasons.
