Surgery scheduled for UConn coach Calhoun

UConn basketball coach Jim Calhoun will undergo surgery next week to address a lower back condition and he will miss the Huskies' next two games. The university said Wednesday the status of the Hall of Fame coach, who has been on a medical leave of absence since Feb. 3, will then be evaluated on "a day-to-day basis." Connecticut's eligibility for the 2012-13 NCAA tournament remains in limbo. The NCAA Committee on Academic Performance met Monday and discussed a proposal to use more recent scores in its determination of adequate academic achievement for teams, but the committee didn't make any rulings and will discuss it in the future. If nothing changes, the Huskies won't be able to play in the postseason next year thanks to low APR scores.

However, UConn still has a chance to make it this year and defend its title. It can take a huge step toward making sure that happens when it takes on Syracuse this weekend.

The Huskies have a strong RPI, but they are just 7-8 in the Big East. And that could have been worse—UConn was lucky to survive a scare from a mediocre Villanova squad Monday ...More
