Christopher paces No. 12 Cal to exhibition win (AP)

Patrick Christopher scored 16 points, Jamal Boykin added eight points and 12 rebounds and No. 12 California beat Division II Chico State 84-42 in an exhibition game Thursday night. Jerome Randle, the Golden Bears' leading scorer last season, had seven points and four assists for Cal, which won despite several sloppy moments against the smaller, slower Wildcats.

Keaton Grant had 14 points and five steals, and the No. 7 Purdue Boilermakers beat California of Pennsylvania 78-44 in an exhibition game on Tuesday night. JaJuan Johnson, a returning All-Big Ten selection, added 12 points and three blocks, and E'Twaun Moore and D.J. Byrd each scored 11 for the Boilermakers, who jumped out to an 18-point halftime lead before coasting.

In one year, Mike Montgomery took California from ninth place in the Pac-10 to the NCAA tournament. He had hoped for a quick turnaround in his first season leading the Golden Bears, and Cal's rapid strides even surprised those who know Montgomery's remarkable record and reputation as a winning coach during nearly two decades at rival Stanford.

Fifty seasons removed from their most recent conference title, the Golden Bears know that winning this year's Pac-10 crown is within their grasp.

"Our expectations are a Pac-10 championship, and I don't see any reason why we're not capable of that," junior power forward Harper Kamp said. "We have the tools we need and we have the chemistry. Things are going our way, but this is our chance to capitalize on that."

With four starters back from a 22-win season, the Bears figure to compete with Washington for the league's top spot.

The expectations aren't theirs alone. Cal fans are hungry, too. Kamp said the players welcome that, and he believes it could provide a healthy motivation.

"We just know that from our standpoint we have a lot of work to do," he said.
