BYU coach says cancer appears gone (AP)

BYU basketball coach Dave Rose is planning on a lot more rest than usual this summer. After all, he's got to prepare for another season. Just weeks after learning he had a form of pancreatic cancer, Rose said Wednesday that doctors appeared to have gotten all the cancerous tumor during emergency surgery to remove his spleen.

BYU will be ready to do its usual damage in the Mountain West in the 2009-10 season, coming back with an experienced team that will include senior forward Jonathan Tavernari, who tested the NBA draft waters this spring.

Tavernari had his name in the draft for about a month, but did not sign with an agent and withdrew his name from consideration on May 21.

"After consulting with my family and coaches I have decided that the best thing for me is to return to school to complete my education and play my senior season," Tavernari said in a statement.

"Next year's team has a chance to be special. I have great teammates and great coaches and I look forward to being part of the program and competing for a fourth consecutive conference title."

BYU basketball coach diagnosed with cancer (AP)

BYU basketball coach Dave Rose has been diagnosed with pancreatic cancer. The university said on its Web site Wednesday that Rose's family announced that tests from emergency surgery he had earlier this month to stop internal bleeding were positive for cancer. Rose had his spleen and a portion of his pancreas removed during the surgery.
