PHILADELPHIA (AP) -- Willie Shaw had 14 of his 17 points in the first half as St. John's opened up a 20-point lead and held on for a 52-50 win over Villanova on Tuesday night.
Elijah Ingram made six free throws in the final 33 seconds to clinch the win for St. John's (12-8, 5-5 Big East), which was coming off a 17-point loss at home to Virginia Tech on Saturday.
St. John's led by 19 early in the second half, but Villanova scored 16 straight points, with two free throws by Derrick Snowden making it 40-37 with 5:30 remaining. Gary Buchanan hit a 3-pointer to pull the Wildcats within two, 44-42, with 2:48 left.
Anthony Glover hit a running jumper with 1:28 left to give the Red Storm a 46-42 lead. Ingram made five of six from the foul line to put St. John's ahead 50-44 before Buchanan sank a 3-pointer with 6.6 seconds remaining. Ingram and Grady Reynolds each made one of two from the line in the final seconds and Buchanan added a 3-pointer at the buzzer.
Glover had 12 points and Ingram added 11.
Buchanan had 17 points and Allan Ray scored 11 for the Wildcats (13-9, 6-3), who have lost four of their last five.
The Wildcats missed their first 13 shots and turned the ball over four times as St. John's opened up a 23-4 lead. The Red Storm led 35-17 at the half.
