Saturday, Dec 17, 2011

AMHERST, Mass. (AP)—Massachusetts used an 18-0 run to start the second half and overcame Quinnipiac 72-67 on Saturday night in a nonconference game.

The Minutemen (9-3) were trailing 40-36 at halftime when they came out as hot as Quinnipiac was cold. Five different players scored in that 18-point run before Ike Azotam finally hit the second of two free throws with 14:54 left for the Bobcats’ first point of the second half.

Azotam and James Johnson each scored 22 points for Quinnipiac (5-5), but no other Bobcat scored more than five points. The Bobcats missed their first seven shots from the floor in the second half and committed four turnovers to end their 3-game winning streak.

For UMass, guard Chaz Williams led the way with 14 points and dished out seven assists. Forward Terrell Vinson scored 13 points to go with his eight rebounds and Raphiael Putney added 12 points.
