Gideon Gamble added 17 points, while Reggie Middleton and George Valentine had 10 points apiece for Winthrop (3-6). The Eagles trailed the Cavaliers 41-40 at the break, but put it together in the second half with a 13-3 run out of halftime.
Winthrop led the rest of the way, stretching the advantage to 77-62 with just less than two minutes to play on back-to-back layups by Jones and Middleton.
Virginia-Wise rallied late, going on an 8-2 in the final 1:45, but it wasn’t enough.
The Eagles outscored the Cavaliers 39-29 in the second half.
Josh Jordan had a game-high 23 points to lead Virginia-Wise, which counted the game as an exhibition.
