Westbrook leads South Dakota to 89-85 win

VERMILLION, S.D. (AP)—Charlie Westbrook scored a season-high 29 points on 11-of-17 shooting and South Dakota hung on to defeat Utah Valley 89-85 on Saturday night.

Westbrook, the team’s leading scorer at 15.3 points per game, made a key jumper with 1:18 remaining that gave the Coyotes (9-10, 1-1 Great West) an 85-80 lead. His defensive rebound, followed by a pair of free throws, gave South Dakota an 87-80 advantage with eight seconds remaining.

Utah Valley (10-9, 2-1) scored a layup and a 3-pointer in the final seconds to make it close.

Jordan Swarbrick led the Wolverines with 22 points, Ben Aird had 19 and Isiah Williams added 18.

Louie Krogman made 7 of 13 shots, including four 3-pointers, to score 19 for the Coyotes, who got 17 points from Jake Thomas and 12 from Trevor Gruis on 5-of-5 shooting.
